Steve Cotterill says talk of him becoming Pompey’s next manager is premature. The contender to succeed Avram Grant says he needs to finish severing ties with Notts County before deciding on his next job.

The ex-Burnley and Cheltenham manager is a popular choice to move into the manager’s seat and speculation he will get the job has increased with his decision not to seek a renenwal of his short-term contract at Meadow Lane.

Cotterill told Sky Sports: ‘I’ve read the administrator's comments and obviously he's said I am a name that is being considered, but I'm sure they have got other good managers to look at.

‘Therefore I can't say too much about it because I don't know what their thinking is, other than it is flattering to be linked with a club like Portsmouth.

‘Let me work my contract out here before we start talking about other jobs.’

Cotterill said it had been a difficult decision to leave Notts County: ‘With the relationship I have with the chairman, chief executive, players and fans, it has been really tough. There has been a lot of soul searching over the last week.

‘The budget wasn't quite what I expected it to be. I'm not saying it was a bad one but it wasn't quite what I expected it to be. It is a great club and they say sometimes you should leave a party on a high, and I'm probably doing that.’
