Paul Groves wants to stay at Pompey – but does not want to be manager. Groves has – perhaps surprisingly – told the administrators moving into Avram Grant’s empty office is not in his thoughts.

The development came as ex-Watford and Reading man Brendan Rodgers became the latest name of the list of possible successors to Grant.

Rodgers has been seen at Fratton a number of times in recent weeks and the administrators confirmed he was one of the possibles – in a move that will hardly excite Pompey fans nor sent season ticket sales through the roof. But at the same time, Andrew Andronikou said Groves was not a contender.

‘We've had half a dozen come forward so far,’ he said of the vacancy.

‘Brendan Rodgers is a name that has been recommended to us by a third party. He is definitely in and around our thoughts.

‘Steve Cotterill is another one of the names that seems to have interest in Portsmouth, we've also been told about him.

‘But I can say Paul Groves has not thrown his hat into the ring - and nor do I expect him to. Discussions have been had between Paul and a senior member of my team and he wants to stay on as a coach.

‘Along with all our backroom staff, right the way to the kitman, he has been tremendous. But he wants to distance himself from the job, he does not want to be manager.’
