Gareth Southgate and Steve Cotterill are the latest pair to be touted as potential successors to Avram Grant.

Southgate has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough in the first half of last season, while Cotterill has just led Notts County to the League Two title. Both appear to rival David James and Paul Groves, who are among other contenders.

The News of the World says former Middlesbrough boss Southgate could be set to return to management after reportedly being offered the hotseat.

Southgate would probably be a popular choice among Pompey’s fans, many of whom are hoping someone with experience of the Championship can be lined up.

Cotterill, too, would bring with him plenty of experience of management in the English game, with Burnley, who have dropped down to the Championship with Pompey, among his former clubs.

Cotterill said: ‘It is ¬flattering to be linked with other jobs but I`m level headed.’
