What's more important than finding Pompey's next boss?

Pompey’s administrators say getting the club back on an even keel is more important than finding a new manager.

Andrew Andronikou says finalising plans for the creditors’ voluntary agreement is the number one priorty – and finding Avram Grant’s successor can come after that. The coaching team will be asked to take the reins for now, fuelling speculation Paul Groves will be the next manager.

Andronikou said: 'I've seen various lists of managers who have already been put together, but our immediate focus is to deliver the proposals for a CVA in the short term. We have to instigate some stability for the club and we are looking at appointing a replacement manager.

'The new chief executive David Lampitt joins us on June 1 and it's only right that he has an input in the decision-making. We have always taken a measured approach to dealing with affairs at the club. We need to make the right decision so we will take our time in appointing a suitable replacement.

'We've got a capable team of coaches there who are very close to our existing squad and will have a great input for the preparations for next season. They have got a wealth of experience and they have already been working very hard in terms of shaping a team for the Championship next season.'

David James is likely to have a say in who gets the job – and that still might be him.

Andronikou added: 'We spoke to David several weeks ago regarding his future for the club, with his contract running out. He has expressed an interest in taking the next stage of his career into management and after he flies back from Austria and just before he flies out to the World Cup, hopefully we will have an opportunity to discuss the situation with him. I'm sure he will have an input into the decision going forward.’
