Kanu is the surprise name on the list of players Pompey want to hang on to – but will he agree to the cut-price deal the club’s administrators must have drawn up to try to tempt him?

The men running Pompey until a new owner comes in have indicated wages of £10,000 a week will be about the most anyone can expect to earn next season. Whether that will be enough to prevent Kanu – as well as David James – seeking a new home remains to be seen. The development came as hopes grew that Avram Grant would snub West Ham to stay at Fratton.

Kanu, James, Hermann Hreidarsson and Ricardo Rocha have all been given the chance to extend their stay at Pompey. Kanu and James signed within a week of one another in the summer of 2006.

Youngsters Lenny Sowah, Joel Ward, Matt Ritchie and Marlon Pack are also set to stay but Angelos Basinas, Jamie Ashdown, Steve Finnan and OJ Koroma have been released.

Jamie O'Hara, Aruna Dindane, Hassan Yebda and Frederic Piquionne all return to their clubs at the end of their loan spells.

‘Preparations for Pompey's 2010-11 season are already under way, as the football club looks to build a strong squad capable of challenging for the Championship title,’ a statement on the club's website said.

‘The football club can confirm it has offered new contracts to influential first-team FA Cup heroes David James, Kanu, Hermann Hreidarsson and Ricardo Rocha.

‘It's hoped the popular quartet will bring a wealth of experience and strength to the Blues' side as they seek to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.’

Meanwhile administrator Andrew Andronikou says he thinks Grant wants to stay at Pompey and not take over at West Ham, though he is keen to discover whether the creditors’ voluntary agreement the administrators are working towards will be in place in time to avoid the threat of a points deduction next season.

News that Iain Dowie is favourite to replace Grant if he goes has underlined the Israeli’s popularity among the fans.
