David James looked ahead to Wembley and rejected suggestions his time at Pompey had been ‘turbulent’ – preferring instead to call it effervescent.

The England keeper said he had enjoyed a wonderful time at Portsmouth despite there having been more downs than ups in the past 18 months of his four-season stay.

James says in the official Cup final match programme: ‘If there were criteria to tick every emotional box, my time at Portsmouth has the lot. Turbulent’ sounds too negative... it’s been...effervescent.

‘What we achieved in the early days – and Harry Redknapp didn’t like me for saying it – with a side that was considered relegation fodder, or at least basement fodder, proved a lot of people wrong, and ourselves right.

‘We continued that trend, doing something Portsmouth had never done before by playing in Europe.

‘Now there’s another Cup Final. There’s frustration too – a lot of our problems are beyond control of the playing staff, but I can’t look at Portsmouth and think it was a bad trip. It’s been wonderful.’

Meanwhile James will have mixed feelings at news that John Terry’s foot injury – suffered in training – is not serious.

James will be pleased there is no threat to the former England captain’s World Cup role, but might be slightly upset he seems certain to face Pompey at Wembley on Saturday.

Terry said: ‘The scan shows there's no break. I aim to train on Thursday, if not Friday, and of course play in the final.’
