Jamie O’Hara may have to play a cameo role in the Cup final at best after admitting he could do himself some serious harm if he risks aggravating a serious back injury by playing the full 90 minutes.

The on-loan midfielder is desperate to play at Wembley to cap a year at Pompey he has thoroughly enjoyed and to make up for past disappointments linked to the national stadium. But a double stress fracture in his lower back means he risks being out of football for a year if he plays.

O’Hara told the Daily Mail: 'I have been speaking to Spurs and they do not want to stop me in any way, but are looking at it longer term. I am going to miss some of pre-season and will be trying to get myself right for the start of next season.

'On a personal basis, while it is great playing at Wembley and would be an occasion, I don't want to kill myself long term. I have had a great season, winning all those awards, and I would not want to go into such a massive game for the club half-fit.

'I will have a sit down with the manager and see. I might just have to play the last half-hour and see how it goes. If it settles after an injection then I will be all right, but right now it is too early to call.

‘I have got two fractures on the lower part of my spine and if it was any other time of the season, it is eight weeks out. Speaking to the doctors, it can be a serious one if you keep playing on it and you could be looking at a year out.

'I will have a big decision to make towards the end of the week whether to pull myself out of it for the sake of maybe a longer-term injury, or to just go for it and see what happens. I would love to play, but it has come to the point now where I am really struggling and can't do anything, which is the most frustrating thing. It is not how you want to be going into a final.'

Pompey did, of course, beat Spurs in the semi-final without O’Hara, but most fans know he is their best attacking midfield man and will need to play, and be at his best, to increase the Blues’ chances of beating Chelsea.
