Pompey could have one of their youngest-ever line-ups of substitutes if they rest one or two of their Wembley heroes for Wednesday night’s trip to Wigan.

The Blues are promising to keep taking league games seriously for the sake of teams involved at the top and bottom of the table – they still have to face three relegation-troubled sides and two vying for European places.

But Avram Grant will want to give one or two of those who returned from injury to play 120 minutes at Wembley a bit of respite instead of making them play at the DW Stadium.

That will mean starts or at least places on the bench seem likely for players such ad keeper Liam O’Brien, defenders Lenny Sowah and Joel Ward and midfielder Matt Ritchie.

Assistant boss Paul Groves took time out from preparations for Wigan to pay tribute to the squad.

He praised the way in which players have handled themselves this season, on the pitch and off it. Groves said: ‘They have shown a spirit and togetherness in the league games when it’s been tough. They’ve stuck together and that’s been evident on a number of occasions.’

Wigan are desperate for points – they are level on 31 with West Ham, four above Hull and Burnley who occupy the first two relegation spots. Roberto Martinez’s team have a game in hand over West Ham and Burnley.
