Talk of Balram Chainrai being interested in buying back Pompey has been shot down by his spokesman after the administrator suggested he was among those in the frame to take over at Fratton Park.

Fans who want to see a completely fresh start at Fratton have welcomed claims Chainrai has no interest in resuming his ownership of the club by taking it out of administration. The development came as assistant boss Paul Groves said Avram Grant was unlikely to have a say in player sales.

Administrator Andrew Andronikou had appeared to say Chainrai, who took over as owner from Ali Aj Faraj earlier in the year, was interested in buying the club back.

But Chainrai's UK spokesman Phil Hall told The News: 'Mr Chainrai categorically denies that he's interested in buying the club back.

‘He will remain until a new buyer is found, as he may be required to continue funding the club while it's in administration, but when a new buyer is found, he will leave.'

Fans welcomed the denial and reiterated their wish for someone new to the club to take over, rather than a return to one of the failed ownerships they have endured in the past seven months.

Andronikou also expects to announce further deals made with the Premier League very soon.

The News believes they relate to forwarding all or part of payments including £11m due at the end of the season if Pompey finish bottom of the league, and £36m 'parachute payments', due to be paid in the next two years if the club is relegated.

In other news, Tommy Smith and Ricardo Rocha are both doubts for Pompey’s FA Cup semi-final with Spurs after injuries suffered at the hands of Chelsea players on Wednesday night. It adds to problems for Grant and Groves, who are already without several other players.
