Pompey’s administrator must have endeared himself to fans further with a pragmatic view of where the players fit into his plans to cut overheads.

Clearly, they are among the saleable assets that have to be looked at, but Andrew Andronikou also says they have a role to play in keeping the club itself as an attractive proposition to potential buyers. And he has no plans to disrupt the squad in the lead-up to the FA Cup semi-final.

Andronikou is showing a greater understanding of football and Pompey than anyone else who has been at the helm this season has done in speaking of the need to balance the requirement to bring in funds with the need to help restore battered pride.

Andronikou said: 'Selling players is an option but first I need to broach the subject with the Premier League. I need their concession. As an alternative from looking at the Premier League advancing TV money, I suggested to them to possibly open the window to allow me to sell two players on a loan-back.

'It's one of those subjects we need to discuss further with the Premier League. However, I will not be looking to sell players before the semi-final and I will not be looking to cancel loan agreements before the semi-final.

'With players, I've got a difficult position because there is a balance to apply. On the subject of football, the club has now got itself in the semi-finals and I definitely want to give the club every opportunity to enjoy that day and get into the final to restore some pride here.

'The minute I start tinkering with the football part it will be a big mistake. I can promise I will leave that until after the semi-final.'

Andronikou admits his hands are partly tied, anyway.

'The players are very much protected by the PFA and unfortunately I am unable to make any cuts in the playing staff. They are very much the shop window of the club so instead I hope they can attract a buyer to this club out.’

He spoke after 85 members of the staff of 320 – that figure does not include matchday-only workers – were laid off.

The administrators have seven weeks left before they must publish to creditors details of how costs are being cut and how they intend to proceed. deals
