As Andrew Andronikou and his colleagues begin the task of cutting Pompey’s costs, they may find the first person in the queue of those pleading their case to stay will be David James.

Clearly, many at Fratton Park will lose their jobs in the coming weeks as the axe falls on all sections of the club’s budget. The playing staff won’t be unaffected, but James ia among those more than happy to take a pay cut so he can stay – and play.

James needs games if he is to play his way into Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad and he won’t get them anywhere else between now and the end of the season.

Even so, James’ willingness to stay until now – and for longer – will go down well with fans who have seen plenty of the players who arrived at a similar time to the goalkeeper flee the next a long while since.

James spoke of the relief at the club that at least everyone knew there was a period to come in which they could not be wound up.

‘There is a sigh of relief in some respects that we've gone into administration as opposed to liquidation,’ said James.

‘It keeps the club in the community, keeps the players here, and despite the fact the money issues are still there, it gives us a chance to keep playing football.

‘As for me, I want to stay at Portsmouth until the end of the season and be part of the most incredible recovery ever.

‘I want to play games. If things have to be done in order for me to stay in the team, then so be it.

‘I can't speak for the other players, only for me. The importance of Portsmouth outweighs the importance of any individual. I am happy to stay here and if I need to sit down and talk to the administrator, then that is what I will do.’

The administrators are expected to start going through Pompey’s books and budgets with a fine tooth comb on Monday.
