Frederic Piquionne scored both goals as Pompey beat Scottish champions Rangers at Fratton Park - on a day when all the talk was that Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim's takeover was set to collapse.

The French striker scored two superb goals to help his new team to an encouraging victory.A sun-bathed crowd of 9,018 saw it, but pleasure at the win is overshadowed by new doubt over the takeover, with further revelations on that score likely on Sunday.Piquionne was making his debut after signing on loan from Lyon and there was also a first start for Aaron Mokoena.

Nadir Belhadj lost possession to hand Rangers an early chance, but Kris Boyd’s shot was blocked. Pompey should have opened the scoring when John Utaka’s run took him into the box but when he set up

Hayden Mullins, the midfielder shot too high. Niko Kranjcar went close twice and Pompey took a deserved lead just after the half-four. Younes Kaboul sent over a perfect far-post cross and Piquionne rose to flick home a header.

It might have been two before the break, but Utaka didn’t connect properly from a Kranjcar corner. Article continues here

Papa Bouba Diop, looking completely over the knee injury that kept him out of the second half of last season, set up Kranjcar just after half-time, but Andrew Little cleared.

But six minutes into the half, Piquionne struck again, winning another aerial challenge before running on to his own flick, rounding the keeper and slotting into an empty net.

He might have had three soon after but he missed a cross from Kaboul. Piquionne was subbed to a great ovation to be replaced by Angelos Basinas.

Pompey were still having most of the chances but Rangers almost pulled one back with 20 minutes to go when Steven Davis beat Martin Cranie, before being denied by Jamie Ashdown.

Matt Ritchie, Joel Ward and Gautier Mahoto replaced Belhadj, Distin and Mokoena for the final 12 minutes. Plenty of positives on the pitch as the team many individuals have written off silenced those critics, if only for now. If only the news was as bright off the field…

Pompey: James (Ashdown 57); Kaboul, Wilson, Distin (c) (Ward 78), Belhadj (Ritchie 78); Diop (Cranie 67), Mokoena (Mahoto 78), Mullins; Utaka, Kranjcar (Bopp 81); Piquionne (Basinas 61)
