Old, they are almost new. I'm on a different timescale. Geological I think.

You'd be surprised how time flies though Rob! It's about 13 years since I ventured into the Teesside band scene with a pokey gig above the Empire/Hogshead/Tavern or whatever it was/is!

There wasn't a clip on the mic stand so one of our mates had to lend us a shoelace to tie the microphone onto the stand! I bet Oasis don't have to put up with that!

The first gig I ever went to was The Candy Ranch at the old Dovecot Arts Centre, around October 1990. I was 17.

They were a great little pop band from Hartlepool and they had a sax player who'd worked with Spear Of Destiny. I've still got the 7" single I bought that night ('Screaming Nutter') although I've nothing to play it on any more. Bought a pint of underage Guinness and had a chat with the singer afterwards about the merits of The Lilac Time.

About a month later I went to my first gig upstairs in the old Empire on Linthorpe Road, and saw Shrug playing live. Rob Nichols was on the door collecting 50p pieces in a Stork SB margerine tub. First time I ever met him. It was all downhill from there.

I'm pretty sure I have a couple of the old 'Lust' tapes from the early 90's with the odd Shrug song.

Lust was the old Friday nights at the Arena before Cactus. Does anyone know what happened to the Easter Island heads?

All Shrug songs are pretty odd. And I think at least one of the Easter Island heads now works for Ten Feet Tall.

I didn't make it to the Arena that often on a Friday, I was always a bit too dedicated to The Kirk. I used to get my fix of local bands upstairs at the Empire. Shrug, Spit The Pips, Hope Springs Eternal and Pellethead. My favourite nights were the ones where they wouldn't open the upstars bar, so if you wanted a round of drinks you had to traipse all the way downstairs to buy it, then make at least three return round trips to get all the beers upstairs because they wouldn't give you a tray.

Was thinking of other local bands when I was listening to the radio and there was a guy on in the Johnny something or other Five who supported the Beatles in Stockton. He mentioned some other bands that played at Billog Technical College on Friday nights. Would be interesting if anyone knows any from the 60's / 70's?

I'm in Thee Strawberry Mynde who were originally round in 1997/98.

Played in a few other bands over the years such as Afterglow, The Sealclubbers, The Che Men, The Alternative and The G Men. The G Men played their final gig this year after forming back in the late 80s from the ashes of The Restrictors who some of you may remember from the Teesbeat comp 'On A Wing & A Prayer'.

Talking of old skool bands I recently found an old tape of a local 80s Mod band called The Issue, anyone remember them? Brought back a few memories of gigs upstairs in The Albert, some Middlesbrough Music Collective do which was held in the car park round the back of the Town Hall and also a great gig in Scarborough with another Teesside Mod band The Singles.

The Issue ended up dropping the Mod image and after a few changes in the line up became 4 And A Half Miles (or FHM as they liked to call themselves). I think the name was from the fact that most of the band came from Marton and this was the distance from Boro town centre. Last time I saw the drummer from The Issue/FHM he was playing in a Brian Adams tribute band.
