Durham folk-punk band DRIVEN SERIOUS have a jam-packed gig listing this summer but not just by waiting for promoters to book them… they are proactively turning their hands to organising their own events! Organised by lead singer Robert Jones, Driven Serious are playing a double headliner gig with THE VALIDATORS at The Cluny 2 in Newcastle on Friday 7 September, with support from local duo SKYLARK SONG.

Driven Serious deliver their unique style of folk-punk in a high energy acoustic and electric stomping, rousing and engaging performances. The band’s lead singer Robert Jones said, “We have great relationships with promoters around the region, who do a fantastic job for the live music scene but we wanted to be proactive so thought we would give it a go. Having never actually organised a gig before it’s been an eye-opener and I can appreciate the hard work that’s put in and the risk music promoters take”. Robert also added, “We have been told that our audiences always feel they have discovered something new, refreshing and progressive at our gigs, and leave with a desire for more of Driven Serious…and we definitely promise not to disappoint with this gig!”

The band draws on a wide variety of influences that make their performances and songs; individually poetic, soulful and genuine. As a result, Driven Serious are beginning to make waves in the North East, being favourites of local radio such as Spark FM, Bishop FM and 102.4 Radio Hartlepool, aswell as playing regular gigs around the region. Their stunning new video for the single ‘Accidental Crimes’ has received outstanding reviews and is an absolute must see, it can be seen on the band’s website www.drivenserious.com or via You Tube.

Double headliners The Validators (formerly The Infidels), are a unique 10-piece band whose eclectic style transcends Ska, Reggae, Celtic, Punk, 60s Garage and Dub, even venturing into Baltic folk and Bossanova - they don’t like to be pigeonholed! Since The Validators formed they have stacked up a collection of rave reviews and have received the thumbs-up from the Strummerville Organisation and Bez (Happy Mondays). Their line-up includes Pablo Cook of Joe Strummer, Pulp, Moby and Lily Allen fame. Playing at this year’s Strummer of Love (the 10-year Joe Strummer anniversary festival) in August, with names such as The Pogues, Seasick Steve, and, Emmy The Great, is yet another credible performance to add to their impressive list of international live shows.

Regulars at Guilfest (three-day music festival in Guildford, Surrey) their performance in 2010 was deemed “best music of the day” by OMH review. Again in 2011, This Festival Feeling’s review said “the highlight of the day was definitely The Validators - whose set of reggae/ska-tinged punk was more like a party than a gig”. This year they shared Saturday’s main stage with Olly Murs, Tulisa and the legendary Jimmy Cliff. Other headliners over the weekend included Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, and, Bryan Ferry.

Local support comes from Skylark Song, an acoustic duo from Newcastle that use guitar, vocal harmonies, fiddle and mandolin to create contemporary folk and blues songs.

With an eclectic array of talent cleverly blending folk, punk, ska and blues, from the acoustic to full band, this special evening promises something for everyone! There’s really no reason to go anywhere else…Advance tickets cost £5 per person and can be purchased from online at www.ticketweb.co.uk also via www.thecluny.com or alternatively you can pay on the door, which will cost you just £1 extra. The Cluny 2 is located on Lime Street, Ouseburn (directly under Byker Bridge). Friday 7 September, doors open at 7.00pm.
