Arguably the north east's hottest act The Lake Poets are having an absolute ball at the moment. The band formed around trainee teacher Martin Longstaffe were signed just last week by revered booking agency 13 Artists and are now sharing the agency’s roster with household names such as Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, Damien Rice, Maximo Park & Michael Kiwanuka.

It is the reward for talented writing and performing and shear hard work for these likeable lads. Singer/songwriter Martin Longstaffe is the core of The Lake Poets and his honest, truthful and heart-felt writing strikes a chord with all who watch him. Martin has the canny knack of being able to write and sing songs that capture the very essence of what it is like to grow up in a post industrial north eastern town. Or City because Martin's home Sunderland made it one step beyond Middlesbrough and actually achieved city status.

As Martin often says on stage in many ways we don't come from the very best of places but it is home and we should be proud of that fact and always strive to make the best of things. He delivers this message in a none preachy way it is just his own personal belief. Yet it is testimony to the fact that so many are being inspired by him that The Lake Poets sold out the Sage for the launch of their very first single, the unassuming 21st century north eastern anthem, City By the Sea.

I thought you might like to hear and see three songs by The Lake Poets, I took these little videos of their performance a couple of weeks ago at the Willowman Festival in North Yorkshire. You can see for yourself how well the band compliments the songs and Stephen Calder's haunting harmonica really captures the spirit and the mood and acts like a musical high lighter pen to give it added resonance.

The Lake Poets are all about north eastern people, their family values and celebrating everyday achievements. They are about good, honest, clever songwriting and through Martin's marvellous voice they give a little hope and provide some inspiration. I think they are superb.
