Youngsters from High Clarence Primary School have taken the centenary celebrations for the Tees Transporter Bridge to their hearts.

With help and advice from Stockton Council’s Care For Your Area team, children from Years 2 and 3 at the school will be planting floral tubs on today (7 October) in a special ceremony with the Deputy Mayoress of Stockton, Councillor Lynne Apedaile, as their special guest.  The floral tubs, complete with plaques to mark the centenary, will be positioned on the Clarences approaches to the Transporter until May next year.

Headteacher Jean Orridge said:  “All the children here are very proud of their links with the Transporter Bridge – they know it’s special and they have been very keen to find out all about it as part of their course work.

“We have already arranged school visits and all our Key Stage 2 children have walked from Newport Bridge to Stockton to look at the other bridges spanning the River Tees.

“Art work by our pupils is on display in the visitor centre and some attended the launch of the new book about the bridge.  A talk from structural engineer Mike Gardiner of Newcastle University as part of our Design and Technology and Science work has shown the children how the Transporter Bridge works and helped them realise its significance to the built heritage not just of the North East but the world.

“All the school took part in designing flags for the birthday show on October 17, with the four winning designs made up into real flags for the party.”
