Shrug play this evening at Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough tonight (downstairs) supporting two great bands, CLECKHUDDERSFAX and SPIN SPIN THE DOGS. Saltburn's Run of the Mills Records are the promoters and I asked Sophie the boss to tell us something about the bands and the label.

Hopefully you know all about Shrug, Teesside perennials now in our 26th campaign and still writing new stuff, a couple of new songs tonight. Maybe a new hat or costume change if I feel inspired. But I'll be definitely getting on the “horse” again.

CLECKHUDDERSFAX is a slang term that lumps together a triangle of West Yorkshire - points comprising of Cleckheaton, Huddersfield and Halifax - into near mythical status. Cleckhuddersfax is also a musical outfit spawned from this conurbation worship.

Starting out in the better half of the last decade, Cleckhuddersfax have more strings to their bow than most bands - the four piece scramble through genres like a lightning hit on a record shop. Broadly speaking their music is soaked in new wave bounce, pools of progressive slop and middle eastern arcs, all driven onwards by the insistent pulse of glam punk forgotten.

This isn't an ironic charity box haul of pride though, it's about making something new and exceptional from the bones of an unwanted past.

SPIN SPIN THE DOGS are a group who formed on the fringes of Nottingham in 2003. Presently London-grounded, the band are a four piece playing out with guitar, keyboard, rubbery bass, drums and a narrative-heavy vocal.

Throughout several lineup changes the band have continually found their stride in different shoes, documenting this with a 10" on Fancy Paradise and a recent album on Gringo entitled 'Leave Me In Leicester'.

Their approach to writing songs is often a collaborative exercise, taking nonsensical twists and turns into streets of rambling postpunk and cul de sacs of dissonant melody.

Run of the Mill is an Independent Record label started started by Sophie McIntosh back in 2005. Originally based in Leeds the Mill managed to escape the hum drum of city life and now reside by the seaside in the North East town of Saltburn.

The label have previously put out records by noisy, off-kilter Leeds acts like Quack Quack, Aged Yummy, Bilge Pump, d’Astro, That Fucking Tank and Pifco. Generally a vinyl lover but dabbling in the occasional digital single there is always something a little nifty, hand crafted and limited edition knocking about.

We have been know to put on many a DIY gig but have only recently started bring some bands up to the Boro. Because of our need to see and dance to some of these and other amazing bands fine tunes. Hopefully our itchy feet will mean more gigs happen over the next few months.
