Middlesbrough Town Hall is excited to announce yet another great gig as Super Furry Animals lead singer Gruff Rhys takes in the town on his travels on Sunday 9 October.

There’s been a flurry of big name announcements coming from Middlesbrough Town Hall in recent weeks with both Smiths hero Morrissey (8 July) and Aztec Camera’s Roddy Frame (11 Oct) stopping off at the venue as part of their UK Tours.

The newly confirmed dates will follow Gruff’s headline performances at various festivals, sold-out tour in February and the release of his heart-warming new album, Hotel Shampoo. Gruff will be joined on stage by North Wales’s instrumental surf rock quartet, Y Niwl

Rhys is most recognisable as lead singer of the critically acclaimed Welsh group Super Furry Animals, who are best known for their psychedelic rock and electronic experimentation. The band have released 9 studio albums, receiving a Mercury Music Prize nomination on the way, and had major hits with Hello Sunshine, Juxtapozed With U, Golden Retriever and (Drawing) Ring Around The World, amongst others.

Gruff had more critical success with side project Neon Neon. Although only releasing one album the duo, which also featured producer Boom Bip, received wide spread acclaim and were duly nominated for the Mercury award in 2008.

As a solo artist he has released three albums, the first being sang completely in Welsh and the second being more varied with English, Welsh and Spanish.

He now checks in with third solo album, Hotel Shampoo, his most ambitious and fully realized yet. As well as the intentions above, Hotel Shampoo is inspired by, and takes its title from, Gruff’s extensive collection of mini shampoo bottles and complimentary hotel products acquired whilst touring the world.

Rhys said of the album concept, “Having never kept a journal these items have become like diary entries, triggering memories of all those buildings and random people I’ve met and inspiring songs on the album.”

“When the craft remains so charming, and flashes of fresh inspiration continue to arrive amidst those captivating melodies, it’s hard to resist.” Drowned in Sound on Hotel Shampoo.

Tickets are now on sale for the gig and can be purchased from
Middlesbrough Town Hall on 01642 729729 or via See Tickets.
