A City at Heart!

Middlesbrough’s Intro festival has today announced it is to play its part in backing the town’s bid for City Status in 2012.

The town is one of a number hoping to be granted City Status as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations next year.

And, in a big show of support, the flagship festival’s main stage will be renamed the City at Heart Stage as part of the high-profile campaign spearheaded by Middlesbrough Council’s Lovemiddlesbrough team.

Intro has built a glowing reputation as one of the best music festivals in the country, and this year will again see around 80 acts spread across a dozen stages right in the heart of the Town Centre on Sunday June 5.

The tasty City at Heart Stage line-up includes chart sensation Example, indie legends Feeder, cool New Yorkers Fun Lovin Criminals, chart-topping rapper Chipmunk, hotly-tipped grime MC Wretch 32, current NME favourites Wolf Gang, and former Specials frontman Neville Staple.

With a bustling population of 720,000 people, Teesside is the largest conurbation in the country not currently recognised as a City - and Graham Ramsay from Boro based promoters Ten Feet Tall thinks it’s about time the area was given the landmark award it deserves.

Graham said: “We jumped at the chance to back the bid – and we’ll be pleased to play our part in shouting the message long and loud that Middlesbrough is truly a City at Heart.”

Originally from Edinburgh, Graham has developed Ten Feet Tall into one of the UK’s most respected promotions companies in the last 10 years – with TFT being named ‘Regional Promoter of the Year’ last year at the Live UK Music Business Awards.

“I moved to Teesside over 20 years ago and absolutely love it to bits,” said Graham. “It’s one of the most passionate and creative places you’ll find anywhere, and that’s all down to the people who live here.”

Judith Croft, Festival and Events Manager with Middlesbrough Council, said: “This is a town that likes to think big, it’s definitely a city at heart, so we’re absolutely 100% behind the bid!”

Lovemiddlesbrough Manager Claire Wordsworth said: “Becoming a city would bring massive economic and tourism potential for the whole of Teesside, not just Middlesbrough alone. So it’s great to have Intro supporting the campaign so prominently from the Main Stage this year.

“Music Live always had a great reputation as one of the best festivals in the UK, and Intro looks sure to follow in its footsteps. It’s another great example of why we can easily describe ourselves as a city in all but name.”

A limited number of Intro early bird tickets at £9.50 (adults) and £13.50 (family ticket for one adult and up to two children aged 7-12) are available until Saturday 30 April at the latest.

After that, or when the initial early-bird tickets run out – whichever comes first – prices revert to £15.00 for adults, and £5.00 for accompanied under 13s. Accompanied under 7s go free (no ticket required).
