Tickets are already flying for what looks set to be a packed night with one of Britpop’s biggest inspirations at Stockton’s ARC on Friday 5 March.

Ex-Squeeze lead singer Glenn Tilbrook was one of the band’s main songwriting forces who, together with Chris Difford, is right up there with classic English tunesmiths Lennon & McCartney, Ray Davies and Elvis Costello.

A swarm of killer hits including Cool for Cats, Up the Junction, Pulling Mussels (From the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart, Tempted, Black Coffee in Bed and Hourglass still pick up bags of radio play today, and have proved a big influence on contemporary artists including Blur, Weezer, Aimee Mann and Fountains of Wayne.

Now a successful solo artist, he’s toured the world over the last nine years – wowing audiences with his down to earth and impassioned style.

His live shows are a winning mix of rousing sets and spontaneous requests (Is there a song that Glenn doesn’t know?) – and new album Pandemonium Ensues is the latest chapter in a rich history that spans Squeeze’s impact in the late 70’s punk explosion to their continued presence on radio today.

“The thing I love most about playing solo is finding I can talk to an audience rather than just saying ‘This is’ and ‘That was’ and ‘Thank you very much,’ which was probably about the extent of my communication before then”, says Glenn.

“It’s great if you’re in a band and you’re powering through a set, that’s sometimes all that you need, but I love talking to people in this new kind of environment.

“I don’t really see a dividing line between Squeeze and what I’m doing now. I don’t feel that I have to play the old songs. I want to play them. I want to dip into all parts of my career because I’m proud of it.”

Glenn’s Stockton date is a team effort between ARC and Teesside based promoters Ten Feet Tall.

ARC Chief Executive Annabel Turpin said: “There are only a handful of tickets left so it looks like it’s going to be another busy night at ARC. Many will know Glenn from his days with Squeeze, but his reputation as a solo artist is now equally as high. We’re really looking forward to this.”

Newsflash Extra: Mercury Prize nominee Seth Lakeman has just been confirmed to play ARC on Saturday 10 April. Often described as ‘the man responsible for bringing folk to a whole new audience.
