John & Edward go Ape at The Empire

X-Factor sensations John & Edward have described the audience at their Middlesbrough gig last night (Thursday 14 January) as “one of the loudest and best we’ve ever had.”

Almost 1,000 ecstatic fans at the weekly student-friendly APE club night at Middlesbrough Empire gave the showstopping twins a huge Boro welcome as they ripped through a barnstorming live set of mega hits including Rock DJ, Under Pressure, I’m Your Man, Ghostbusters and Oops I Did it Again.

And the twins stayed behind for well over an hour after the show, happily signing autographs, posing for photos and chatting backstage with the first 100 fans to arrive on the night.

Speaking after the marathon autograph session, John said: “That was the biggest reaction we’ve had since we’ve been out doing these shows. It’s definitely the most beautiful venue we’ve played, and the crowd were absolutely fantastic – really friendly, and one of the loudest and best we’ve ever had.

“We’re really looking forward to coming back to the North-East with the X-Factor tour in the spring if this is anything to go by.”

Fans – and fellow twins - Jodie and Carly Jameson of Linthorpe were equally impressed. Jodie, 21, said: “That was quality. And the boys were great backstage too, really friendly and down to earth.”

Students Julie Stainthorpe from Grangetown and Cassie Lewis from Normanby, both 18, also met the X-Factor stars after the show. Julie said: “That was amazing. Absolutely brilliant - and miles better than we thought they would be.”

Delighted promoter Phil Saunders of Ten Feet Tall said: “I’m totally over the moon with the crowd’s reaction, and Jedward were fantastic – both onstage and off.

“We thought there was something very odd and very wonderful about those boys before the gig – pure star quality – and now we know for sure. They just lit up the stage and were hugely entertaining.”

APE is a bustling student-friendly night every Thursday night at The Empire. Expect some great music in a majestic setting, plus a ton of surprise monkey business on the night.
