Tonight in Middlesbrough the brilliant Dutch band Bent Moustache play with Shrug and British Lichen Society upstairs at the Tavern, Linthorpe Road.

Bent Moustache are ploughing through the snowfields of UK on their nationwide tour. The Dutch band will be arriving in Middlesbrough all the way from Anglesey where they played what I’ve been told was a storming set at Menai Bridge last night.

Fronted by former Dandelion Adventure bassist Ajay Sagar The Bent Moustache produce amazing soundscapes and blinding melodies. At times reminiscent of mid 80s bands like Ride or My Bloody Valentine or with the present single more in tune with a spirited 21st century Chumbawamba.

The new single is a double A side. Loyalty Scheme is outstanding I think. I’m not alone in this assessment either as Bob Fischer has been playing to death on his evening show on BBC Tees.

British Lichen Society are from rather closer to home but no less interesting. It’s primitive, rhythmic and a bit reminiscent of early Fall. In Peachy they have a charismatic frontman who stalks the stage, clutching the mic to him between bouts of hammering hell out of his guitar.

The bill is completed by veteran post post punk band Shrug. Fresh from the 1980s they’ll not let anyone down with a full on live show. As many costume changes as you can shake a pantomime horses leg at.

The gig will be a revival of old Middlesbrough Music Collective nights in the same upstairs room where the likes of The Ex, No Means No, Darling Buds and Snuff played near on 20 years ago. Today the old Empire pub is called The Tavern and you get to upstairs from a rear door in Wilton Street.

The gig is just £2 in
