The Kids From Solid Gold have written up an end of term report and it makes such favourable reading I thought I would reproduce it here, in full.

Season’s greetings from TKASG.

Well, what a year it’s been and it was rounded off in wonderful style by Messrs Drever, McCusker and Woomble who were ably supported by Heidi Talbot and Boo Hewerdine last Friday. We’ve really had a ball and we hope you have too.

Thanks to anyone who has supported one of our shows this year – it really is massively appreciated. We couldn’t do this without you.

The other highlights of the year for us were:

Fanfarlo @ Westgarth

Seriously fab and well worth the two year wait to bring them to town. (Note to Fanfarlo: Can we do it again please?)

Mumford and Sons @ Cluny

A band whose magic is as fresh as it comes. This was an exceptional show from an exceptional band.

Woodenbox with A Fistful of Fivers @ the Georgian Theatre

The crowd were suitably wowed. It’s great when you discover a new band as magnificent as they are. PS, they’re coming back next year. Yay!

Alessi’s Ark @ Mohan’s

Beautifully crafted songs delivered in the most intimate of settings. A really great show from this wonderfully talented artist.

The Leisure Society @ Westgarth

A great show and three weeks later Nick Hemming was nominated for the Ivor Novello award. Brilliant!

Album of the year:

Butcher Boy – React or Die

Sheer brilliance. Given 5* reviews in the Times and Telegraph, we love this album, and it is rightfully finding its place in the end of year (and decade) album polls in the press. Seek it out.

Notable mentions:

Fanfarlo – Reservoir

Released in at least 25 different formats and special editions on at least 42 different occasions (well you can never have enough copies of this album) our favourite band finally got to release their debut album and we love it. Bravo!

Trembling Bells – Carbeth

Out on Damon Albarn’s, Honest Jon’s label, you’ll either love this or it’ll irritate the life out of you. Like Fairport Convention meets Blyth Power, it’s bloody brilliant, if an acquired taste.

Looking forward to:

Flotation Toy Warning

There’s a whisper that they will be coming up for air in the new year - about time too if you ask us. Their debut album (out back in 2004) gave us a sound akin to a Grandaddy/Flaming Lips hybrid mixed with Victoriana beats. It was equally as wonderful as it was unique and we wait with great interest on news of their new album.

Uninhabitable Mansions - UK dates in 2010?

Freelance Whales - UK dates in 2010?

Finally…

Here’s to the bands we haven’t discovered yet. Cheers!

All the best for the coming year.
