Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge will remain closed while the extent of structural repair work is assessed.

Engineering experts are due to undertake a full survey of the iconic structure over the coming months.

Initial investigation work undertaken last summer revealed issues with the bridge's struts, and subsequently the need for a detailed review of the Transporter's overall structural integrity, foundations and gondola operation.

The Bridge, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2011, is expected to be closed until at least September.

At that stage options for repair works, maintenance and future operation will be considered by the Council's Executive.

Councillor Dennis McCabe, Middlesbrough Council's Executive member for Environment, said: "The Transporter Bridge is a truly historic structure that has been in almost constant operation for well over a century.

"That takes its toll, and it has become clear the Bridge cannot continue to run without significant repair work and investment.

"It is therefore unavoidable that the Transporter should remain closed while a full structural assessment is undertaken, and we have a clear picture of the options available to us.

"While we appreciate how frustrating this is for those who use the Transporter on their daily commute or for leisure and fundraising activities, the safety of the travelling public and our employees is of paramount importance.

"We will endeavour to keep those affected informed of the latest developments, and apologise for any inconvenience."
