The Wildebeests, Johnny Seven, King Mojo, Continental Quilts

Westgarth Social Club

Fans of what might be called ‘The Medway Sound’ should be familiar with the members of The Wildebeests - they’ve done time in the Delmonas, Masonics, the Thanes, the Kaisers, the Pop Rivets and Milkshakes.

Lenny Helsing: Bashing, wailing
John Gibbs: Chopping, shouting
Russ Wilkins: Slashing, screaming

The Wildebeests are something of a garage-rock supergroup, seeing as the group consists of John Gibbs (The Kaisers, Holly Golightly Band, The Masonics), Lenny Helsing (Thanes, Green Telescope) and, last but not least, Russ Wilkins (Pop Rivets, Milkshakes and Delmonas). These three gits all cut their teeth playing raw beat music and generally causing an aural ruckus and have been doing so since before the likes of the Arctic Monkeys et al were born (which obviously means that theyre at least twice as good as any of those young whippernsappers!). When their paths crossed they found that they had the same old cranky, rusty equipment plus some new(ish) shiny tunes that they had accumulated along the way and, wah hey, the Wildebeests were born!

Supports include The Continental Quilts from Tyneside who played our Lee Brilleaux evening and Johnny Seven from Teesside. More to be confirmed soon.

Goosed Records at Dr Browns

7:30 PM – 11:20 PM

Goosed Records are honoured to host American touring artist Sammy Kay at Doctor Brown's as part of his UK tour, along with Manchester based Arms and Hearts.

Hailing from Asbury Park, NJ singer/songwriter SAMMY KAY has lived the kind of romantic life that can only be found in a song. After living in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, then seeing the world working as a tour manager for three years, Kay has used his travels and experiences to hone his song-craft into an endearing mixture of punk rock, Americana, and soul. Always behind-the-scenes helping other artist’s grow and succeed, Kay built strong friendships all across the country, these friends would later come together to help record his debut album. Now, with the release of his debut full length, Fourth Street Singers, SAMMY KAY is excited to step into the spotlight and show listeners what he’s capable of.

Arms & Hearts (UK)

“Home is wherever you happen to be” is more than a lyric for Arms & Hearts — a.k.a. Steve Millar — it’s a mantra at this point. Equally comfortable on a dimly lit folk club stage or at a loud and lively punk show, Arms & Hearts combines the storytelling and workrate of a classic troubadour and the heart on his sleeve punk rock passion.

The Nomad Hat Tour (Part 2!)
The Madness Continues !!

The young band, fronted by the feral, precocious Jonny Brown, roared into the race of indie rock with such anthems as ‘You Stole The Sun’, ‘She’s a Weapon’ and ‘Lucy The Castle’. Their irrepressible energy and ability to deliver inspired rock’n’roll gained them the support slots with Oasis, Kasabian, Paul Weller, The Courteeners, The Happy Mondays and Ian Brown to name but a few, as well as sell-outs on their first UK and European tours.

Keith James - The Songs of Nick Drake

Today's Price:
£15 + £0.10 booking fee

This unique and dedicated concert begins with an introductory set of timeless songs by brilliant songwriters who were contemporaries of Nick Drake; Richard Thompson, Bert Jansch, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, Vashti Bunyan, John Martyn, Bridget St John, and Roy Harper. Also featured are transcriptions of poems by William Blake - one of Nick's greatest influences.

Nick Drake is the most revered and loved of all of this country's singer-songwriters. He recorded three cherished albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. Now, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his genius, Nick Drake has become a national treasure and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2018.

Keith James has always been the most consistently devoted concert artist, transfixing gig-goers across the country with his beautiful series of concerts entitled The Songs of Nick Drake.

He was the first artist to bring this fragile and intriguing music to live audiences. The result has now been 17 years of highly acclaimed concerts amounting to over 1500 shows in the UK, Ireland, Holland, France, Italy and Spain including all of Nick's schools and colleges, as well as Glastonbury Festival.

Waiting Room

Swedish Queens of Banjo Punk!

The sisters of Baskery are back on European soil, after living and loving in the US for nearly 3 years. Their backpacks hold new songs, new experiences, new friendships and broken promises. But no hard feelings.

It all started with a move to Nashville, a request from the band’s American publisher. The trio traveled overseas without a master plan and settled down in one of the less hip parts of the city. Surrounded by Mexican diners, body shops, a couple of tattoo studios, numerous stray cats and all kinds of opportunists, the sisters built a home in the American south, where they got creative in their living room and on the porch of their wooden house on Leafland Avenue. They biked through every limb of Nashville and got to know and appreciate the city, where so many people with artistic dreams come to fulfil them.

"Extraordinary songs, virtuoso performances, beautiful moments"
Tom Robinson, 6 Music

Life, for Hope and Social, started one drunken night in the Grove pub in Leeds in April 2007; a place indicative of modern England: a traditional pub hemmed in on all sides by Leeds’ garish glass giants and the cement palaces of new-wealth. Hope&Social wanted to create something to reflect this, something more than just a set of songs but a statement on English culture.

'We hail from the far-flung corners of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland but our home is in Yorkshire in the North of England. We’re a band… and as well as the proper bandy type things like gigging, touring, playing festivals, making and releasing records. We like to involve people in most everything we do… and they never cease to amaze us. We have fun and make art. We create events to remember. We talk about what we do and stuff we care about."

Hailing from Canterbury, Kent, the eclectic outfit - influenced by genres including indie, pop, world music, hip-hop and R&B - signed a publishing deal with Peermusic back in 2016, before a short break which saw the band return to their home studio to work on their EP. New music was the result of their hiatus, which was quick to demonstrate a rapid development of the band into a more mature, radio-ready act. Details:

Mike McGrother presents An Ordinary Man

In 2016 Mike ‘The Wild Rover’ McGrother walked to Witton Park in County Durham from Carrickmacross in Ireland. He wanted to discover and experience the plight of his ancestors’ immigrant journey and settlement in the 1850’s. Mike went to share it in his highly acclaimed Pub Opera ‘Of Rogues and Honest Men’ in Stockton’s ARC. But the tale wasn’t quite finished.

Using songs, recordings and his natural gift as a table top storyteller, Mike and his Infant Hercules choir bring us bang up to date by sharing the story of the McGrothers’eventual arrival and the trials of an uneasy settlement in Teesside, It also marks the start of the end of Mike’s searchfor his beloved Grandad Jimmy – an Ordinary Man with an extraordinary gift born right here in Middlesbrough.

This is a story of just one family – but practically everyTeessider will recognise strands of their own history and influences within it.

‘And so condemned I stand – but just an ordinary man’

Peter Hames

*** Head Of Light Entertainment *** (Pop/Alternative)

Boro favourites HoLE return to Whirly D!! An unusual, hard to pigeonhole, four-piece alternative pop band, often labelled “quirky” or “off-beat”. The band’s sound could be more accurately described as a modern, scratchier take on 1970’s art rock. A fascinating live act, blending bravado with gaucheness to memorable effect..

*** The Danny Kebabs *** (Indie/Alternative)

Legendary Teesside outfit, from the minds behind Goosed Records.
