Randolph's Leap + Broken Chanter

Waiting Room

Adam Ross is a songwriter and musician from north-east Scotland who releases music under the name Randolph's Leap which can range from a solo project to an 8-piece band. He has been steadily building up an eclectic back-catalogue of uplifting folk-pop - a mixture of solo home recordings and full-band studio epics released via cult DIY labels Fence, Lost Map and Olive Grove. His melodic songs fuse wordplay, introspection, humour and poignancy and they recently became the inspiration for a theatre show called The Isle of Love which was written and produced by the award-winning Right Lines Productions. Adam had an integral performing role in the show which received 5-star reviews and played to sell-out audiences across Scotland in 2018.

Randolph's Leap's sonic world is one of heart-bursting melody, funny and poignant lyrics, folk sensibilities and lo-fi fuzz. Adam's engaging on-stage persona can captivate a room and his music has been compared to Jonathan Richman, Sufjan Stevens, Belle & Sebastian, The Divine Comedy, Magnetic Fields and Loudon Wainwright and a cult following has grown around Adam's memorable and evocative songs.

Adam is currently working on the 4th Randolph's Leap album (due for release in 2020) as well as a brand-new folk music and theatre project inspired by the 1936 novel 'Wild Harbour' by Ian Macpherson, a dystopian love story set in the Cairngorms.

"Masters of melody... lo-fi indie-pop gems" – The Metro

"They are ace" – Marc Riley, BBC

"The next generation of witty Scottish indie-pop... A songwriter who is both honest and charming, combining the strut and humour of Neil Hannon, the sincerity, vulnerability and softness of Stuart Murdoch and the lyrical wit and musical playfulness of the DIY Daddy, King Creosote himself." - The Quietus

The first Broken Chanter record marries the landscapes of where it was written and recorded with musings on the
inevitabilities of ageing, the indelible marks of your past, and love (for once) and resilience in a world circling the drain.
Found sounds recorded in Ireland, Japan and Scotland mingle with lush instrumentation and the best songwriting of
MacGregor’s career-to-date, to create a beautiful collection of songs combining the traditional with the contemporary, pop with alternative rock and shuddering electronica.

A new star in the world of traditional song – Jack’s first album received great acclaim and his live

performances are a delight on every level – immense talent and charm.

I regard next week's guest on Monday 7th as good news. Jack Rutter hails from South Yorkshire where he was close to Will Noble’s family and imbibed the local singing tradition. He was already well known as an instrumentalist (guitar, bouzouki, concertina …) as part of Moore Moss Rutter and collaborating with several of the big names in English folk. Then he emerged as an exciting singing talent. His first album got excellent reviews from the likes of Kathryn Tickell and Jon Boden, so many that I struggled pick a quote — check out his website at for more. He has a new album out this month too. I was impressed and delighted by his live performance at The Black Swan Folk Club in York and hope that we get a good audience for him at The George & Dragon in Norton.

Now the bad news - many of you will already know that Brian Fisher, piper and singer, died at the end of September. His funeral is on Friday (11th Oct) at 11:15 in St Hilda’s Church on Hartlepool Headland TS25 0DA and local Northumbrian Small Pipers will feature in the Service.

Fewer will know that Mike Shorttle died last Friday after a long struggle with Parkinson’s and related conditions. He was 80. Mike was a stalwart of the Folk Club over many years, singing, playing melodeon and bodhran and acting as MC. He also took our music further afield as one of The Endeavour Shantymen and of The Otterby Band. Two of the good guys have gone — our condolences to their wives and families.

UK “National Blues Treasure” (Planet Rock Radio), Danny Bryant, brings his highly-anticipated new release to Stockton.

Danny is acknowledged by those in the business as one of the cream of the crop. Following many sold out club tours across Europe and numerous major festival appearances that have seen the band perform on the same bill as such names as Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana, Buddy Guy and Peter Green to mention a few; Danny and his band have steadily carved a huge and loyal fan base around the world.

Please note this is an all seated event.

PRICE: £12

Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra don’t care what genre you choose to put them in – western swing, country blues, ragtime hokum or whatever else– as long as you understand that they’re 100% sincere and 100% immersed in this stuff. This is no lazy pastiche, no dressing up box. They live and breathe this music and want you to get immersed with them.

The band tour the way bands should – widely and endlessly – winning friends and fans at each new show with notable performances at festivals like Glastonbury, Bestival, Wilderness and Cambridge Folk Festival. They’ve appeared twice on Radio 4’s Loose Ends, and had their music played by everyone from Marc Riley to Huey Morgan.

*** Onlooker the band *** (Garage/Rock)

No nonsense garage rock from Hartlepool. Fast-paced chaos.

*** W H S *** (Alternative/Rock)

Discreet, yet visually striking garage rock band. They arrive shrouded in mystery, a secret society operating below the surface of civilisation with one simple aim - to light the way for those lost within the darkness of despair.
