There are so many top shows this weekend, either side of the Tees. Peter Hook shines a light on Joy Division and New Order at Middlesbrough Town Hall tonight. There is a free Studio 64 reunion at Dr Browns, from where you can see the old door to the former subterranean community music hub. And that is just for starters.

DR BROWNS

Goosed Records is proud to welcome Boro music royalty to Doctor Brown's on 20th September, for the best reunion gig since Zeppelin played the O2 back in 2007.

After over 20 years providing invaluable recording space to bands from Boro, STUDIO 64 closed its doors following a takeover and relocation to Stockton. But on 20th September, Goosed Records proudly hosts a STUDIO 64 REUNION.

One of the stalwarts of Studio 64 was Goosed Records' very own Nigel Crooks and through him we've made this happen. We see so many parallels with that studio and what we're trying to build at Goosed, and not just because we're smack opposite it. Our ethos of providing creative recording space for all Teesside musicians has many similarities with what Studio 64 did for bands of a previous generation and it's something we felt we had to celebrate!!!

We've assembled an incredible lineup of bands that regularly frequented number 90 Corporation Road. They are:
8:00 Andy X
8:45 Pellethead
9:30 Werbeniuk
10:15 Shrug

SAT 21st SEPTEMBER

Me, Thee & E + George Boomsma

Little Theatre Club, Middlesbrough

7.30pm

£7 On The Door

A fabulous “double bill” of rich musical integrity – ideal for the cultured Toft House audience!

ME, THEE & E'S take on the singer-songwriter thing spirals out of a love of jazz, classical and folk music, from Bach to Gershwin, Paco de Lucia to Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald and back again. Their songs tell the tales of their times - relationships, society, philosophy and politics, all told with the naive wisdom of late-night bar talk ringing clear in every crevice. There’s anger and sadness, optimism, gladness - protest against something or other and after 18 months trawling the country for venues and listening ears, they now bring to the table a selection of songs from this first period of touring life.

GEORGE BOOMSMA is a progressive folk musician from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. George's effortless vocals and sensitive guitar playing evoke an intimate atmosphere that silences even the rowdiest of crowds!

George has released two albums, 'George Boomsma' released back in Summer 2016 and 'Do Something With The Night' which was released February 2018. He is currently in writing for his third.
He has played alongside artists and bands such as Neill Maccoll, Kathryn Williams, The Travelling Band, Skinny Lister, Emma Langford and Martha Tilston. He has been played on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 Music and performed at Latitude Festival 2016 on the BBC Introducing stage.

Summer 2017 he signed a publishing deal with Faber Alt which led to his music being played on the hit Japanese TV show 'Terrace House'. He has toured extensively throughout the U.K, Ireland and The Netherlands packing out many venues on the way.

"If it were possible for Nick Drake and Thom Yorke to collaborate, it might sound something like this." - Fresh On The Net

"Heartfelt writing, heart-stopping vocals and a perfect poised performance - what's not to like?"- Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6 Music

"Songs of exquisite beauty, with a voice that could melt ice caps... gorgeous stuff."- Bob Fischer, BBC Tees

"Probably the best folk musician you’ve never heard of."- Culturefly

SUNDAY 22 SEPEMBER

Jeffrey Lewis and The Voltage

The Waiting Room

7.30pm

SOLD OUT

Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage play a brilliant style of scuzzy urban indie-rock-folk, like a 21st Century mash-up of Sonic Youth, Pete Seeger and R. Crumb. Born and raised New Yorker Jeffrey has pursued a relentless touring schedule around the world ever since 2002, as well as playing as the opening act for bands like the Mountain Goats, Daniel Johnston, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Dinosaur Jr, The Fall, Dr. Dog, Pulp, Roky Erickson, The Vaselines, and more. Jeffrey has released eight critically acclaimed albums on Rough Trade Records and Don Giovanni Records, and Jeffrey continues to self-publish his art and writing in an ongoing underground comic book series called Fuff. Current bandmates the Voltage are Brent (Moldy Peaches) Cole on drums and Mem (Cat Tatt) Pahl on bass and keys. This is really the same band that has been touring 2016-2019 as Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts, but Jeffrey continues his tradition of changing the band name with each album… Their new full-length album “Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage: Bad Wiring” was recorded in Nashville with producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo), and will be released November 1, 2019, on Moshi Moshi Records in UK/Europe and Don Giovanni Records in the USA.

MON 23 SEPTEMBER

JEFF WARNER
STOCKTON FOLK CLUB

George & Dragon (Norton) back room

7.45pm

£9/ £7 members

A reminder that next Monday (23rd Sept) we’re hosting Jeff Warner at The George & Dragon in Norton.

Jeff is from the USA, son of noted song collectors Frank and Anne, and he sings many of their songs along with a whole range of American material from gospel to shanties. This is not dull folkloric-studies stuff: he is above all an entertainer who can inform and amuse as he rattles out the songs and tunes. He plays banjo and concertina (and a few “pocket instruments”) and enlivens his performances with a dancing doll.

I make no apology for saying he’s one of my favourites — I’m sure most of you will enjoy an evening with Jeff.

As usual a copy of our poster is attached.
