RECREATION OF MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL OPENING PARADE

A recreation of the image of the original opening parade at Middlesbrough Town Hall will take place Saturday, January 26 at 11am.

The event is part of the iconic building’s 130th anniversary celebrations taking place in Middlesbrough this weekend.

The original opening parade featuring the Prince and Princess of Wales took place on January 23, 1889.

The recreation will involve community groups, children and young people and will take place on Albert Road, outside the Town Hall.

Dray horses and carriages and a recreation of the street decorations by Pauline Taylor will bring the history of the Town Hall to life.

Photographer Charles Twist will be using original 19th century lenses and will shoot on paper to create sepia prints.

Those wanting to recreate history are encouraged to attend the recreation and feature in the crowd for the photograph.

Costumes will be provided on the day along with a souvenir photo from the day.

Volunteers wishing to dress in Victorian costume will be need to be available from 9.30am-1pm on Saturday, January 26 and must sign up in advance by e-mailing hello@stellar-projects.co.uk.

The Town Hall will celebrate its 130th birthday on January 25 and 26. Celebrations will also include: Paul Smith concert, Interactive Laser Light Synths, Middlesbrough Portraits community fair and of course tea and birthday cake.

Cllr Mick Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: “By recreating the original Town Hall opening parade image we are hoping to celebrate the Town Halls 130th birthday by merging the rich history of the town with everything that is new and exciting about Middlesbrough.”
