A new piece by acclaimed pianist and composer Nikki Iles is to have its world premiere this month at the Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender.

The new commission will be performed by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra as part of their concert at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Over the past couple of years the EQ Project: Remixing the Gender Balance in Jazz has commissioned and premiered new works by Issie Barratt, BBC New Generation Winner Laura Jurd, Yazz Ahmed and Nikki Iles.

Iles has progressed into the front rank of British jazz and has been part of a team at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music since 2003.

‘Wild Oak’ will form the centrepiece of the first half her performance with the NYJO at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Saturday, October 20.

The piece is dedicated to one of Iles’ favourite musicians – the late Geri Allen, pianist, composer and female jazz musician.

The 2018 Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender takes place at Middlesbrough Town Hall from Friday, October 19 to Sunday, October, 21.

Tickets are available from Middlesbrough Town Hall Box Office on 01642 729 729 or visit
