A Gateshead film-maker and his BBC Tees radio presenter friend are heading to the Edinburgh Free Fringe with a live show based on their love of the world's longest-running sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine.

Andrew T Smith and Bob Fischer forged a friendship over their mutual adoration of the series, and - when the final episode aired in 2010 - decided on a whim to start watching all 295 episodes from the start. For their own amusement, they kept an online blog of their thoughts about every episode on their website, www.summerwinos.co.uk but it quickly began to build a cult following, and the quest slowly began to take over their lives.

Winos
In recent years, they have made short films in which they track down the series' original locations in the West Yorkshire town of Holmfirth; organised events at the show's real-life 'Sid's Cafe'; interviewed many of the show's original stars; and even been treated to a slap-up dinner by Last of the Summer Wine's writer Roy Clarke... a heartfelt thankyou gesture for keeping the show's legacy alive!

They have now turned their obsession into an hour-long live show, also called Summer Winos, which they'll be performing at PBH's Free Fringe at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from 12th-17th August... in a venue also playing host to household name comedians Phill Jupitus and Robin Ince.

Bob explains, 'Our friendship was forged over our mutual love of the show, and when it ended in 2010 we watched the final episode together. As a joke, as the credits rolled, Andrew turned to me and asked if I fancied watching all 295 episodes from the start... and, being the kind of chap who likes a challenge, I said yes!'

Andrew add, 'We've been asked a few times if the show is us acting out our favourite Summer Wine scripts. But, although we like to dress up as Compo and Clegg, it's very much a show about our relationship with Last of the
Summer Wine from our childhoods onwards, and what we've learned about British social history from watching such a long-running series.'

'We're also keen to dispel a few myths,' laughs Bob. 'If anybody mentions baths rolling downhill every week, they're going to get very short shrift from me!'

After a successful preview event at Teesside's Waiting Room venue, and an emotional special performance before a packed-out audience in Sid's Cafe in Holmfirth, the Summer Winos live show is being staged at Bannermans in Edinburgh at 4.15pm every day from 12th - 17th August, and entry is completely free.

Full details - as well as seven years' worth of Andrew and Bob's thoughts on the show - can be found at www.summerwinos.co.uk and they're also to be found at www.facebook.com/summerwinos or @summerwinos on Twitter
