Donald Trump, David Attenborough and Peter Rabbit are just some of the big names appearing at Middlesbrough’s Central Library in the coming months. 

Thanks to a new link-up, audiences in Middlesbrough will be able to enjoy both live and pre-recorded screenings from the British Library in London.

Friday, January 26, 7pm-8.15pm - LIVE

From Apprentice to President: Donald Trump, One Year On

This event will explore Trump’s impact on domestic and foreign politics as our panellists discuss what his presidency can tell us about both the man and the country. The first US President to be elected with no previous political or military experience, Donald Trump’s rise confounded his critics and delighted his supporters. Looking back at the year since his inauguration, panellists Bronwen Maddox, Tim Newark and Luca Trenta, led by chair Philippa Thomas, will explore the major issues which have defined his first 12 months in office.

David Attenborough and Chris Watson

The 2017 Longplayer Conversation brings together long time collaborators sound recordist Chris Watson and naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough. This is the first in a series of recorded screenings that will be shown on the last Tuesday of each month.

International Women’s Day Lectures

5pm - Harriet Harman MP, former deputy leader of the Labour party and author of A Woman’s Work, discusses 100 years of the vote for women. What has been achieved, and how much is still to be done? In conversation with Joan Bakewell.

7pm - Leading women's rights campaigner Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, Jill Liddington and Robert Wainwright discuss the struggle for the vote and ask how far women have come since the suffragettes, how far they still have to go and how they will get there. Chaired by Julia Wheeler.

Migrant Songs: Music and Migration in South Asia

Migration has been one of the biggest stories of recent centuries. People have left, if not fled, their homes. What emotions did they experience during that journey? What were their moments of fear and hope, and how did they express it?

This pre-recorded talk will use rare and ephemeral texts in Bengali and Assamese from the British Library South Asia collection to explore the creative life-world of migrants.
