Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) welcomes back their young people’s group with a bang this month.

The Wonder Whys are a group of inquisitive 14-24 year-olds who are interested in doing, making and questioning the world we live in.

Making their first appearance as a newly formed four piece at the launch of the Localism exhibition on 10 October, the group will lead a weekly programme open to anyone who wants to come along and take part in exciting workshops, performance art, photography, debates, and many more creative and critical thinking sessions.

mima’s Young People’s Coordinator, Helen Wickens said: “The Wonder Whys is not only a way to make great friends, it’s also an opportunity for young people to work with established artists and gain exclusive experience of working with a range of exciting local projects.

“Joining the Wonder Whys will mean you receive invitations to special events and exhibition openings, meet and work with artists and musicians, and gain invaluable portfolio and career advice.”

Sixteen year-old Harrison Braithwaite from Middlesbrough, has been a Wonder Why for almost two years. He said: “(Being a Wonder Why) has offered many unique and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that I wouldn’t have had offered to me otherwise.”

In November 2014, The Wonder Whys took part in the national Kids in Museums Takeover Day which saw them ‘take control’ of mima for 24 hours, experiencing everything from managing reception to curating exhibitions. The Wonder Whys will be taking back the reins this November as the 2015 Takeover Day returns.

Sessions will run every Thursday between 5.00pm – 7.00pm and are free with no need to book or obligation to attend each week. You don’t have to be an artist to be a Wonder Why, as long as you are aged between 14-24 years-old and have a curious mind, you will make a great addition to the team.  The project also offers valuable support towards a Bronze, Silver or Gold Arts Award qualification.
