Schoolchildren from across Teesside are celebrating the joy of classical music at special events in Middlesbrough.

The children have been learning to sing, dance and create new pieces of their own, and came together at the Town Hall on Friday to share their work in a concert entitled ‘Classical Creations’.

As well as sharing their own creations, the ‘Classical Creations’ showcase featured massed singing and body percussion in a spectacular and enjoyable finale.

The Town Hall has been working with 18 schools and the BBC Ten Pieces programme to inspire children and young people with classical music.

And more schools will be getting inspired by classical music on Tuesday (June 30) when 450 children will descend on Centre Square to learn and perform a body percussion piece written especially for the BBC Ten Pieces project by composer Anna Meredith.

The children will be taught the piece using the Big Screen in the Square, before all coming together for one final performance.

During the piece, called ‘Connect It’, it is the children’s own bodies which become the musical instruments, with the sounds created by clapping, stamping and shouting forming the music.

Town Hall Business Development Manager Rob Guest said: “Classical music is very much alive in Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley, and it’s just great that it can help to inspire such a large number of children.

I know they have been working really hard on getting ready for these events, and I’m sure it will all pay off for them.

The concert on Friday was wonderful, and I’m sure Tuesday’s event in Centre Square will be just as exciting.

Who knows, we may be inspiring the concert performers of the future.”

  • Connect It will be performed in Central Square from 10am on Tuesday, June 30. The event is free and open to all.
