After the success of the inaugural Twisterella Festival last October, Middlesbrough’s most dynamic and forward-thinking independent music promoters, Pay For The Piano and The Kids Are Solid Gold, have announced details of Twisterella Festival 2015. Taking place on Saturday 10th October, the 1000 capacity festival will utilise well-established music venues such as Teesside University Students’ Union, The Keys, The Westgarth Social Club and TSOne, with pop-up sessions planned for Sticky Fingers and The Twisted Lip.

Festival co-director Henry Carden said, “We’re thrilled to have secured the continued support of our venue partners. They all share our vision for creating a vibrant day of live music right in the heart of our town. It was incredible to see hundreds of people enjoying some of the brightest and best breaking bands in the centre of Middlesbrough last year and we’re already incredibly proud of the line-up we’ve put together for this year’s event – we’re sure you’ll discover your new favourite band.”

National touring acts confirmed so far for Twisterella 2015 include: Brighton-based BBC Introducing favourites Fickle Friends, Scottish indie-rock heroes Fatherson and Leeds alt-rockers Allusondrugs. Hotly tipped acts such as Beach Baby, Washington Irving, Model Aeroplanes, Plastic Mermaids and NYTCLUB will be joining them, along with North Eastern big hitters Slug, Hyde & Beast and former Chapman Family front-man Kingsley Chapman & The Murder. More touring bands will be announced over the coming weeks, including a couple of international acts.

BBC Tees’ local music mogul Bob Fischer has selected some of his top Teesside tips to open the festival: Serinette, Dressed Like Wolves, General Sherman and George Boomsma. They’ll be joined by fellow regional acts Bi:Lingual, Joe Ramsey, Keep Breathing, Josh Newell-Brown, Lissie’s Heart Murmur and Plaza. There’ll also be a rare solo performance from Billy The Kid, aka Young Rebel Set’s Matty Chipchase.

Fickle Friends

Two Teesside groups who stole the show at Twisterella 2014 will be returning this year, in the form of Avalanche Party and Mouses. “We’re keen to avoid the line-up becoming predictable, so we’re trying not to have too many bands playing this year who played last year. However, both Avalanche Party and Mouses have really raised the bar recently and are flying the flag for Teesside bands right now“, said Henry. “We’ve also teamed up with Jimmy and Simon from Ku Bar in Stockton and asked them to choose a couple of bands. We want Twisterella to be representative of the whole Teesside music scene, not just The Kids Are Solid Gold and Pay For The Piano.” The Ku Bar team have so far booked Brummy indie-rockers Cold Ocean Lies and hotly tipped, NME-endorsed, Liverpool lads Lives.

The promoters involved in Twisterella both have a long history of bringing breaking acts to the region, having previously secured Teesside shows for the likes of Mumford & Sons, The Vaccines, The 1975, Palma Violets, Frank Turner, Drenge, Wolf Alice, Catfish & The Bottlemen and many more earlier in their careers. Festival co-director Andy Carr said, “We are passionate about presenting Middlesbrough as a confident town and one that is very much at the cutting edge for showcasing the finest emerging talent. A number of acts from last year’s line-up, such as Prides, Eliza and the Bear and Jake Isaac, have already gone on to bigger and better things. Twisterella really is a chance to see tomorrow’s acts, today.”
