ARC Summer Sounds: Collectors Club + John and the Ragmen + Avalanche Party + Georgie Van-Hoof

Are Collectors Club one of the best, brightest most perfect pop bands ever to emerge from Teesside? Well yes, they are… but let’s not get all parochial here. They’re one of the best, brightest most perfect pop bands in the country, full stop!

Frontman Joe Smithson has always claimed that, when Collectors Club formed in 2011, they had no loftier ambitions than making a few cheeky bedroom recordings. But it’s hard to imagine that brilliant, toe-tapping singles like First To Know and Still Lie With You could ever be confined to such humble surroundings! Within weeks of their first recordings getting an airing on BBC Tees, the band had picked up attention from 6 Music, and were swiftly booked for a triumphant appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at T In The Park.

And the sound? Think early Postcard Records, Vampire Weekend, Edwyn Collins and Bombay Bicycle Club all wrapped up into the most perfect, summery cocktail of dreamy, youthful romanticism you’ve ever heard. 2013 single Wanna Be You was another 6 Music favourite, and made it onto the BBC Introducing Picks for 2013 album; and 2014 is shaping up to be another landmark year in their unstoppable rise up the pop echelons.

And that’s not all! Two more of Teesside’s finest and most acclaimed young bands will be special guests for the evening. John and the Ragmen boast a fresh, funk-filled pop sound, and new debut EP The Jester Recordings has made them instant favourites on the local scene… check out Lions & Lambs, a hit single in the making if ever there was one!

Meanwhile, the thunderous Avalanche Party are the regenerated 3 Foot Ninja… brothers Joe and Jordan Bell and drummer Kane Waterfield have been joined by the impressively-quiffed Owen Corrigan (formerly of The Chapman Family) and are already creating a wall of glorious, heartfelt noise that has seen early recordings like I’ll Get Through become Youtube sensations.

And opening the show is young Teesside singer-songwriter Georgie Van-Hoof, playing sunny acoustic pop with just a hint of heartache.

Join them all at ARC for a celebration of all that is great about Teesside – and British – music!
