WorldFest Nuit D'Afrique

Set towards the end of May, just as we’re easing into summer, WorldFest brings something different to the cultural life of the Tees Valley, with a packed schedule of events.

On Friday 22nd May Nuit d’Afrique promises a vibrant and exciting night of top quality live music from the heart of Africa, performed right in the heart of Stockton at ARC.

The night will include performances from;

Rafiki Jazz – vibrant sounds for the whole world to dance to.
O'nel Mala – spiritual soulful singer from the Ivory Coast, West Africa.
Kasai Masai – music from the African village with an urban edge, festival favourites.rafiki

The first 100 audience members will be able to take part in an exhilarating mass drum performance – turn up and be amazed!

Star of previous WorldFest's Congolese Soukous superstar Kanda Bongo Man will  attend the Festival as a guest of honour and has agreed to perform a number of songs during Kasai Masai's set at the ARC on Friday 22nd May.

Last November, Kanda Bongo Man was caught up in the celebrations of Barack Obama's presidential election victory when he played to Barack Obama's grandmother in Kenya.

International musician Kanda Bongo Man led his band to the Kogelo village to congratulate Mama Sarah Obama for the victory of her grandson Barack Obama in the US presidential election.

The musician’s arrival caught the village by surprise; no one had imagined that the internationally renowned artiste would one day set foot on Kogelo. A huge crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the musician.

It was during the visit that Kanda Bongo Man, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, announced that he would soon release a song specially composed for the president-elect.

Rowena Sommerville said "we are delighted to welcome Kanda Bongoman back as our special guest for WorldFest 09 and we are sure that his performance with Kasai Masai will be electric".
