A landmark year for the Tees Newport and Tees Transporter Bridges is to be marked by a new Cleveland Art Society exhibition later this month.

‘The Green One and the Blue One’ at The Heritage Gallery, Cargo Fleet, launches with a Preview Night on Friday, February 28 - the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tees Newport Bridge.

The artwork brings together an array of impressive paintings, drawings and prints produced by members of the Cleveland Art Society in partnership with the Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Cleveland Art Society has been Middlesbrough’s principal drawing and painting group since the late Victorian period and has been central to the story of the town and its relationship to art.

The Preview Night takes place in the prestigious historic setting of The Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet from 5.30pm - 7.30pm on Friday, February 28, with the exhibition then running from Monday, March 3 to Friday, April 11 (9am-5pm Mon-Fri).

The eagerly anticipated exhibition is the latest in a number held at The Heritage Gallery, which showcases the history of Teesside’s industrial heritage through a range of exhibitions introducing visitors to an array of artistic and historical collections.

The Gallery provides quality exhibition space, offering opportunities to all artists and groups in the North East, with the aim of providing a platform for artists, supporting emerging talent and showcasing new artwork.

Cleveland Art Society Exhibition Secretary Alan Morley said: “The Society often focuses on the local landscape and this exhibition, in the Society’s 130th year, fittingly takes place on the birthday of Dorman Long’s Tees Newport Bridge and celebrates the neighbouring Transporter Bridge.

“By bringing together professionals, those new to and those still learning art, we hope the exhibition will encourage members of the public to take part in future exhibitions.”

Newport BridgeSociety member and artist Brian Collins added: “I have memories of visiting the Transporter Bridge as a child and seeing the Newport Bridge lift in the 1960s on trips out with my auntie in her bread van.

“It is fantastic that through the Society I am able to display my artistic interpretation in the exhibition.”

‘The Green One and the Blue One’ has been developed with the support of the Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project’s education, learning and events programme.

Supported by a £2.6m Heritage Lottery Fund award made in 2011 to mark the Bridge’s centenary, the landmark is scheduled to reopen in late Spring with improvements including a new lift to the upper walkway of the Bridge, a refurbished gondola, renovated Visitor Centre and new Winding House Viewing Area.

Tosh Warwick, Tees Transporter Bridge Education, Learning and Events Officer, added: “We are delighted to support the Cleveland Art Society’s Exhibition.

“This year is an important year for both bridges and the exhibition’s celebration of the two landmark structures through local art is a fantastic example of the variety of ways in which our Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project celebrates the industrial heritage of the area and engages the community.”
