Teesside's very own BMX Bandits are hitting the road again at the weekend to promote their sport. The BMX revival continues following the sport’s inclusion in the London Olympics, and there’s plenty on offer in Middlesbrough for newcomers and returning riders alike.

Local riders are hoping to recreate the heady days of the 1980s when the area was home to numerous BMX tracks.

Last September a group of enthusiasts relived the sport’s heyday by undertaking a tour of the old sites, some of which are still visible with embedded tyres marking out turns and jumps.

The event was such a success they’re doing it again this Saturday (September 14) to raise awareness of the sport, encourage former riders back into the saddle and attract new participants.

Starting at 8am, the 11 riders will be reversing last year’s route starting at Faverdale in Darlington, then on to Teesside Airport, Stockton (track near Holme House), Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit/Prissick, South Bank (x2), Harelandshaw, the recently built track at Eston, the recently built track at Redcar (Trunk Road), Redcar Racecourse, Saltburn, Skelton Green and finishing at Margrove Park at around 9pm.

The whole ride is about 60 miles and will be completed using restored 1980s BMX bikes.

Organiser Mike O’Reilly said: “The ride was a great success last year, and this year we’re taking in some of the new tracks that have opened since.

“It’s great that the new facilities are being built, and we are hoping that by linking them up once again by riding between them we can raise further awareness of what was once available.”
