Transfer window thoughts by Paul Marsden

So the January transfer window is upon us and much like the window in the summer just gone there are so many different names being thrown in the hat.  Mainly for players coming in.  Some very much make believe, some with an ounce of truth and some that to be honest we can all only dream of.

My thoughts on the players I’ve heard linked.

David Beckham

I love Beckham the player, Beckham the man, and Beckham the show.  The bloke is an absolute legend in my eyes but cannot see any reason why he would want to come play for us.  Although it would only be three months I would take him no problem.  This guy would work wonders for big Andy.  I think he only has eyes for spurs and maybe United.  Would be nice though.

Robbie Keane

For some reason I can’t really see myself singing ‘Keano.’ Obviously through no fault of Robbie.

Keane would be an awesome signing, whether it is on loan with a view to a permy or on a permy straight away.  I can’t see him costing an awful lot and reckon he is the perfect partner for Andy Carroll.  Great experience and great quality.  Again though I can’t really see it happening.  I will believe it when I see it.  I am guessing here, but surely he must be on something along the lines of sixty maybe seventy grand a week at spurs.  I just can’t see Ashley paying this.  On the plus side though I think keane may be the kind of guy who would take a pay cut to play.  He seems to care a lot about his football and he would walk into our team.  Birmingham though could probably match his wage.

David Bentley

Bentley is a player I rate very highly on his day and despise him when he has an off day.  Consistency would be a problem as well as keeping him fit.  On his day though, apart from becks I can’t see a better deliverer of a ball.  Andy Carroll would have a field day.  I’d like to see it happen.  He is the kind of quality that we just don’t have in wide areas and can only improve the squad.  I fancy the same wage problems as Robbie Keane although this nugget may not be as easy to knock down a grand or two.  I think he may be off to Liverpool.

Adam Lallana

Not our level at all.  He was billed years ago as a superstar in the making but stuck with a falling stone in Southampton and unfortunately followed them into to being not very good.

Santa Cruz

Wages again a problem and too similar to Andy Carroll, experience could help though.

Max Gradel

Young Leeds lad, also unlikely as only been at the club less than a season.  Has a lot of proving to-do but wouldn’t be too much of a risk on small wages and next to no fee I would of thought.

There has been a few more but these seem to be the strongest links.

Who would I go for?  For me the man that stands out other than Robbie Keane is another Irishman in Kevin Doyle.  I don’t know anything about his contract situation or whatever but surely this would be a step up for him.  He seems a great top flight player.  I think in a better team than the readings and wolves he has played for he would be awesome. His touch, his awareness, his attitude and his goal getting would suit St James so well. Another great partner for Carroll and if he and Keane came we would be laughing.

There is talk of Carlos Vela heading to Bolton on loan from arsenal; he is another that could do a job for us.  This lad can finish and yet again would play so well off Andy Carroll. I’m afraid Arsene Wenger like Owen Coyles lip work too much to let that happen though.

I think with the players coming back from injury and the players currently playing that we will be alright until the summer, where again we must look to improve.  Players like Gosling, Ben Arfa and Steven Taylor are like new signings to us and for me will be the difference between a good and bad second half of the season.

I have heard a lot of down beat, worried supporters over the last few weeks.  I don’t see us struggling.  I think there are too many bad teams in the league and whilst the mackems are performing well we just cannot fall back.  This is all the motivation we need.
