We are heading towards the 130th Tyne-Wear derby with bragging rights never being so important. In recent seasons the fantasists have managed to get well and truly above there station, and believe they are the numbero uno in the North East. We can’t deny that we were relegated due to a shocking season with failures in all aspects of the club, but that is the only time we have been relegated from the premier league. Unlike our wearside rivals who have had that dubious honour on 3 occasions only narrowly missing out on the top spot thanks to the Premier League decreasing the competition to 20 teams in the 94/95 season thus resulting in Crystal Palace finishing 4th  bottom  and being relegated for a fourth time thanks to a 3-2 defeat from the toon. Not to be outdone in relegation honours though, the mackems battled back in 2005/2006 to claim relegation with 15 points a record for lowest points. Now it has not been all lows for our wearside rivals they have reached the dizzy heights of 7th in the premiership leading to a lot of there fans suffering from altitude sickness. When compared to our highest finish of 2nd  and our shared record with Nottingham Forest for the highest finish from a promoted club, finishing in 3rd in our first season in the Premier League. Now one of the benefits of being in the top flight in English football is the ability to qualify for European competitions, we have all chanted at some point you have never seen a Mackem in Milan but you have in Lisbon where they were defeated 3-2 on aggregate in the Uefa Cup Winners Cup 2nd round back in 1973, We all know of our European success in 1969 and any mackem would retort that’s history well so is 1973 and your FA Cup win. But in recent times we have qualified for european football and went a lot further than the 2nd round.  In domestic competitions  Sunderland have won 9 trophies in total and we have won 11 another fact in favour of the toon. Now we are starting to see a similar pattern forming here basically anything you can do we can do better. With that in mind now you can understand why there is a such a resentment towards Alan Shearer,  since every striker they have had has not compared to him even the legendary Brian Clough or the ressurection of the deadly duo Yorke and Cole.  Shearers record as the alltime Premier League top goalscorer can not be ignored and is looking harder and harder to beat in the current game with the lure of spain still appealing to most players. his records for most goals in a season have never been beaten only equalled by a certain Andy Cole playing for Newcastle United  with 34 goals in 42 games and since it was changed to 38 games Shearer now shares the honour with Christiano Ronaldo with a tally of 31 goals respectively. When it comes to actual derby games we have won 49 to there 40 in the league and 51 over 45 in all competitions.  Even with these facts in Black and White there is no way our fantasist rivals would recognise them, In relating to Baz’s article in the last issue could it be possible the mackems are living in an alternative reality in which they have been the dominent team in world football. With the likes of Gabbiadini and Gates being world player of the year on numerous occasions and Kevin Phillips really being England’s number 9.  Milton Nunez being the Premier Leagues all time top goalscorer and Sunderland being voted as the European City of Culture.  The honest reality being that the mackems are a club living in the shadow of  Black & White superiority, with there biggest success story being Nissan. No matter how many knocks we have taken over the years we have still achieved more than our counterparts.  So as we head into this derby with our heads held high, knowing we can rely on a Titus Shambles underperformance and the sheer talent of Hatem Ben Arfa.
