I have one, excellent bit of kit. I've been using Shield since the 2015 version.

I download all my content so I use Kodi to play it back off my HP micro server, which it does so flawlessly. Cant really comment on any other apps as I only really use kodi, youtube, crunchy roll, iPlayer, Amazon prime, Netflix etc. it runs most android apps I believe although some you may have to side load.

TiviMate is a really good IPTV app.

There's a free version but I'd recommend the paid one. It's something like £5 a year or about £18 for a lifetime membership. It's really well supported with constant improvements and has a lively community on Reddit where the creator listens to suggestions.

Works well on the Shield.

yes, I have one too.

I have kodi, my plex server and iptv app with a 1tv ssd plugged in via usb for recording, also mounted my qnap server for local media.

It's by the far the best media player I have, but you only need the pro if you want to use plex, otherwise the standard tube one will do.

I also have the amazon cube, it's not as fast as the Shield, but is still better than my other boxes.

Side loading is basically where you install an app via a file yourself that isn't on the app store. So some things might not be available officially for your devise so you had to install it in an alternative way.

Tivimate displays an EPG but you need to give it a link to feed in the details for your channels.

It's also a bit more future proofed as higher better specs, more ram, more built in storage, has 2x USB slots for external storage etc. If all you will ever do is stream, might as well get the 2015 version.

you usually get all the Freeview channels with IPTV

but you can download a few Freeview apps or channel-specific apps (IPTV Hub, iPlayer etc) if you want. But as I say IPTV usually has everything, including catch-up and on-demand

Yes all freeview channels are on the iptv sub, but no sub is rock solid out of sync free all the time, you do get issues .
So Iíd rather not use iptv for that .
