Any apprenticeships out there for school leavers?

Just my son really keen to start something.

He's on board with an agency that look for things, but nothing really materialising.

Mid 80s I went to the EITB in Billingham.
That was a great start.
Every lad I knew who went there have gone on to do really well for themselves.

Anything like that out there now?

Any advice would be helpful.

OPITO take apprentices on every year for the offshore oil & gas sector. Very hard to get a position though, they're obviously much sought after.

What trade? Usual suspects are NETA, TTE and Middlesbroguh college. The lad has to be pro-active and get his CV out there. His best option is to secure a job, a company willing to put him through an apprenticeship. They will have a recognised training provider they always use. If he goes to one of the above, he could attend for 2 years study, not get a job, but leave with qualifications. Also note that apprenticeships are now end tested. There is no course work or log books to be signed off along the journey like the old NVQ's.

Check out Network rail, my son was taken on by them & is enjoying the job, it can necessitate travel but, the pay is good, accommodation is decent (my lad has a nice flat + expenses sorted for him) decent pension and good job security.

Hi Dibzzz, our lass works at Stockton Riverside College and they have a scheme called YEI , which stands for Youth Employment Initiative, If you private message me on the new board I will pass you her work email details and will explain further some of the help they give youngsters and getting them training and into employment.

Have a look at marine engineering apprenticeships with most of the big shipping companies. Get a decent wage see a bit of the world, and very transferable to either offshore or onshore work,

Thanks everyone.

Block 21.

He is on with YEI. And we've worked on his CV
with them and that has been sent out to a few firms.

The lass on his case has been brilliant and very helpful.

He is supposed to be getting an interview with an industrial painting and decorating firm, after a brick laying apprenticeship interest didn't work out.

I'm not sure about painting and decorating tbh, apparently they're a good firm, their name escapes me at the moment, but any start with the way things are would be a step in the right direction.

He's still only 15, 16 middle of next month, did well at school chose difficult subjects, and we expect decent GCSE results.

Like myself at that age he's ultra keen to start a trade, he's simply not interested in the University route.

I'm out of the working game now, have been for years, so my contacts are very limited.

A few of his mates have managed to get apprenticeships through Dad's, uncle's etc, so frustrating for him that I can't offer him that.

So I'm doing the best I can.

As above NETA, TTE, ECITB & OPITO if he can get in will all provide a great career at the end of it, if he does well.

You could always go down the RAF route, well looked after with great career prospects & will travel the world. Plus, transferable skills.

I wouldn't go into painting & decorating, especially if he didn't like brick laying.

Persistence & confidence is the key. I'd also wait for the better route than just take anything. Play the long game, it'll be worth it.
