I watched this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I had completely forgotten about the lead swingers like Redknapp, Anderton, Steve Stone etc who has no business anywhere near an England team.

I know we look back through rose tinted specs, but the overall quality of football at that tournament was appalling. All very scrappy and niggly, with not a great deal of skill overall.

First half was diabolical from both sides. I always wondered who Anderton was blowing to be handed the England shirt. Terrible all over the pitch. Even Ince looked woeful.

Anyone else notice Adams lining up in the wrong half for the kickoff despite winning the toss?

Its was worth sitting through the dross, just to watch the magic involved in Gazza's wonder goal, the way he lobbed it over Hendrie than smashed it past Gorham was sublime.

On his day, Gazza was a special talent.

Nice to see the list of players in that game who went on to wear the Boro shirt.

Gazza, Ince, Southgate.

I had also forgotten that Adams/Pearce careers overlapped with Gary Neville.

oh yeah, and Calderwood was still a giant tool back then too.

"I know we look back through rose tinted specs, but the overall quality of football at that tournament was appalling."

We tend to judge tournaments by how well England do.

In terms of football, Italia 90 was awful, with negative tactics and produced the lowest goals/game of any world cup. Yet we remember it fondly because England did well.

By contrast, USA 94 is remembered as dull, because England didn't qualify. But it produced more goals/game than any World Cup since 1982 to the present day.

Euro 96 follows the pattern: much of the football was poor. I also think the poor attendance at most matches counts against England when bidding for future tournaments.

band on FH.

I remember watching both tournaments and absolutely loving them at the time, and not just the England games, I remember watching some other crackers as well.

But re-watching them is just so disappointing as they were pretty poor games all in all. Bit like watching football league level games I suppose.

Worth watching for the nostalgia if nothing else, and wishing I still had my Italia 90 England top, or that I could still fit into my Italia 90 England top. [|)]

Well watching retrospectively takes all the tension out of it too.

I know fans complain about their team "putting them through it", but it's what we go for really.

Didn't McAllister appear at Boro for a short period?

I loved re watching it just for Gazza. I don't think it was his best game but you look at him and he plays like a kid in the school yard. He just always 'shows' for the ball and envolved in the action.

I'm not sure we have or ever will see a CM in that style. He was simply a flawed genius who could have been anything.

I also forgot that it was never a penalty. Adams clearly got the ball... VAR would have over turned that fecker[;)]

It's the first time I've watched it in full since 96. It's definitely an easier watch than in 'real time'.

Totally agree with the Anderton comment, he brought absolutely nothing to the table in my opinion. Every pass is a simple one and caught out of position or losing his man.

Also the more games I watch from the past I cant help to think Paul Ince was massively overrated. The first game against the swiss he gave the ball away countless times

The thing I took from watching that game was Gazzas' willingness to try and beat a man, and to play the ball forward.

He lost the ball several times during the Scotland game, but it's the fact he had the confidence to be so brave in such a big game.

He wasn't scared of trying things in case they didn't come off, as others have said, he played like a kid playing with his mates in the park.

And of course, the goal he scored was just audacious.

from a quality aspect the players [since 2001] have gone up a few notches in terms of skill and focus, but I'd have to question a lot of players commitment to the game.

Random fact - the Scotland game was on the day of the Friarage Hospital (Nothallerton) Summer Fete 1996. One of the things I like about being a football supporter is the ability to remember what you were doing on specific dates from the football fixtures!

And it was all about Uri Gellar you know.
