Did You Know There Was a Civil War Battle at Marske?

The action took place in the summer of 1643 at Marske-by-the-Sea, in what was then a rural and coastal parish and manor that was the home of Royalist Colonel Sir William Pennyman and nearby relatives, the Pennyman’s of Ormesby, North Yorkshire.

Pennyman’s owned a lot of businesses in and around Ormesby — not too sure if they’re still around?

The Pennyman family lost ownership of Ormesby Hall because of the civil war... it was only returned to them ( the son by this point) once Charles II was put back on the throne and they were rewarded for their loyalty.

Marske Hall is 17th century and Ormesby hall has a 17th century wing - that was once the main hall until a more imposing Georgian update was built.
The 20th century is fascinating too - Colonel Pennyman was pretty right wing in his views his wife Ruth left wing. They ran unemployment relief ventures in East Cleveland where there was 90% unemployment at one point between the wars. But both had opposite aims. Amazingly they still worked together on this and everything else.

Not particularly amazing. Arranged marriage likely. Saw little of each other. Seprate lives. Marriage based on family ties, commercial interest, land ownership...

There was a popular 1970’s song “Rocket Man” by Messrs E John and B Taupin that had the line... ‘Marske ain’t the kind of place to raise you kids’... I think...

The last reference I have seen to the Pennyman family was the stuff they were doing for the fitness and wellbeing of those in East Cleveland around WW2.

Do they still have any local ties? Or any prominence at all?

Emerson's the Pennyman's died without heirs, Colonel P was actually wounded in WWII. Ruth Pennyman left Ormesby Hall to the National Trust.

While Marske Hall was bequeathed as a Cheshire Home many years previously.

Either side of Middlesbrough the land was owned by landed gentry - old money - in the Hustlers of Acklam Hall and the Pennyman's of Ormesby Hall. Their lands stretched down to the Tees and both had their own ports - Newport and Cargo Fleet respectively.
These land divisions lived on into the 20th century map of Middlesbrough. There was a toll bar at North Ormesby and you had to change bus or get on a trolley bus at that point.

The trees planted in the depression must be a welcome amenity today (although conifers are politically incorrect nowadays).

Was the name 'Marske-by-the-sea' in use that long ago? Presumably, it depends on the existence of the other, inland, Marske?

Were the Pennymans linked to the Dundas family (David 'blue jeans' Dundas and co)?

David "Blue Jeans" Dundas is indeed one of THE Dundas/Zetland family - he told Bob Fischer this much in a radio interview.

This was during the Roundheads v Cavalier wars.

Fast forward to the 1990s and the Roundheads were all driving Cavaliers.
