Painting the Garden Fence

Have just started again painting the garden fence for this year but realise I’m blummin sick of it year after year.
I use well known brands which say they’ll last ages but after 12 months they’re back to being weatherbeaten etc. Does anyone know of a really good fence paint that’ll last properly and keep the wood ok and retain some colour? Thanks

Are you sanding it down a bit before you paint it or just paining another coat on top of the old?

The good stuff was always what the old County Council used to use and the only place i knew selling it was Decorator Store on Newport Way Canon Park (shut down according to google maps)about 44 quid a tin but annoyingly i cant remember what the tins called. I know the decorator who lives along Hambledon knows what its called ill ask when i see him otherwise i would choose a barn paint or similar usually 40 quid. Personally i use matt black johnstons masonary paint 11 quid from the range.

The barnnpaint is on amazon which will annoy a few but this is what happens when shops only stock mass produced ducks back crap.

I thought creosote (italics)was sump oil?

Brings back childhood memories. My dad creosoted anything that didn't move.

Thanks for the update lads. Haven’t sanded it as I’d rather rip me own ‘ead off, bad enough painting it. That barn paint sounds champion. Cheers all

Think it depends on the quality of your wood. I tried cuprinol and it wasnt great on my fence. It needed 4 coats one year. but tried wilkos own brand last year and that covered much better only one coat. Better brands dont always mean better results.

Nobles Whitby sell creosote ,I had run out of primer the other day and asked my dad if he had some .he said he had bought a couple of tins in the sale ,two unopened tins from great mills d.i.y .how long have they been shut .he also has in his shed a curtain pole unopened from Dickens .on a different note he asked me if I would pick mother up from guisborough she would be outside fine fare.
