My dad has got a few cameras that are quite old and look like they might be worth a fair bit on eBay. Does anyone know someone locally that deals in that kind of item?

I don't think there is any such thing locally any more? There used to be a place in Post House Wynd in Darlo that bought and sold second hand cameras. Long gone.

My advice would be make a note of the make and model numbers and then check out what they have sold for recently on Ebay to do this use the "Advanced Search" options and tick the box for "Completed Listings". If you decide to sell on Ebay you may struggle to sell high value items if you have not had an account for some time and got some good feedback. Sell (or buy) some cheap stuff first.

There's a shop in Northallerton at the other end of the High Street from Lewis & Cooper.

Generally speaking if it's 35mm and Leica or Contax it's likely to be worth a few bob (a lot more if it's a Leica).

6x6 cm cameras - Hasselblad are worth a good few quid (hundreds).

Other than that unless they're speciality jobs or rare antiques you might find it disappointing, stick the names in bay and see if there are any on there, but make sure you're comparing exactly like with like.

It's a Hasselblad 500 C. Such conflicting prices on eBay as I don't have anything to test it with so wouldn't know where to start with a valuation. Was ideally hoping for someone I could take it to that could test it and make him an offer.

I've got some others butt value wise they don't seem to be worth much anywhere near as much.

Keith Sanderson Photography is the place in Northallerton. Keith actually died a few weeks ago but I belive his son has taken it on. Its at the bottom of the High Street just round the corner from Laura Ashley.

That's the one.

Hasselblad 500C is the first of the 500 series and the main difference from the later 500C/M is you don't have interchangeable focusing screens (if my memory serves).

You should get a few hundred for it especially if it's in good nick. Price also depends on the back (if it has one) and the lens (if it has one). Needless to say everything will have to be working properly. eBay seems to start at around 550 - 600 mark, depending.

I've got a Hasselblad 500C/M with 50, 80 and 150mm lenses although I hardly use it these days.

Friend of mine who is always buying and selling cameras uses Ffordes (Inverness so you can hardly nip in on a Saturday afternoon) and they give fair prices, although you'd likely get more selling it privately. If you do use e-bay bear in mind there are chancers out there - I sold some Contax gear a few years ago and had people claiming there was dust in the lenses (there wasn't). Just told them to send it back and I'd refund. They didn't.

Thanks for the replies. Tried ringing the bloke in Northallerton but he said as his dad had just died and he had over 500 cameras at the moment he wasn't interested.

His suggestion was Camera Mart in York. Ideally I want somewhere we can take it to as we can't be sure of it's working order and wouldn't want to deal with eBay if there are any issues. If I'd known a bit more about cameras I might have been tempted to try on his behalf.

Seems a very niche thing in this region at least.

Hi I deal in camera equipment but I live down south.
Have you tried looking on YouTube there are several videos explaining how your camera works you could use these to check it's working fine.
For lenses firstly you need to check the glass to make sure its clean, old lenses can develop what we call fungus inside. To check hold the lens up to a light source and look through the lens.it should look clean,if its milky or has what looks like spiders web then this would affect the value.
Lenses do get dust inside but anyone who knows will expect some dust specks in old lenses.
And yes unscrupulous buyers will try it on claiming dust.
The other thing to check for on a lens is oil on the aperture blades. This can affect opening and closing of the diaphragm.

If you take it to a camera shop they aren't going to pay much medium format cameras are not that popular at the moment.

You could take your stuff to Tennants in Leyburn they do have 3 or 4 camera auctions a year and the stuff makes decent prices
