In recent years I think Stewy was the quickest in the squad for many years?

The thing with Adama is his initial acceleration over the first five yards. I fancy over 100 yards Stewy might even be quicker, but that first fives steps is what gives you the edge in football.

There's no way you can be serious with that.

Adama would annihilate any version of Downing over any distance.

Traore is built almost identically to Yohan Blake, he has the perfect body for a 100m sprint, as well as the best genes, that's no coincidence. There's probably footballers who could pip him at the distance, but certainly not Stewart Downing [:D]

Nicky Mohan was selected for the Rumbelow's sprint challenge ahead of Ripper.[;)]

Pace on a football pitch means pace over 10-30 meters. 100m is around the length of most pitches: very rarely do players run that far.

Surprisingly according to the stats adama is not even in the top 10 fastest players in the premier league. I think his qualities are acceleration and brute strength rather than pure speed. Downing before he did his knee in was very quick.

Another vote for Billy Day. He really was swift in his day. He might even have been the fastest.

I know most of you will never have heard of him as he was around in the late '50s but he used to catch balls that no winger I've ever seen would have got near retrieving. Ed Holliday on the other wing was swift but not near Billy for pure pace

Defenders and players who run without the ball are always more likely to clock higher top speeds, that's always been the case. Traore is very rarely sprinting without retrieving the ball or having to stop.

Some absolute rubbish people are coming out with here, pure speed is absolutely a Traore quality, he's not just accelerating quickly, he's a physical specimen absolutely ideal for a 100m sprint, he just doen't need to sprint over distance and usually has to slow down to keep in play.

Most of the quickest players are full backs and wingers. I genuinely don't think adama is as quick as sane sterling or rashford for example. Is however so explosive off a standing start, no one gets near him. When he was at the boro he almost never took the ball on the run, he does it now at wolves. I remember him getting out sprinted by sessignon from fulham a few times when we played them.

Would have been interesting. AT was certainly the fastest I've seen on a football pitch, but I'm not sure I've seen him run 50m, let alone 100m.

it's that explosive burst that counts on the football pitch; I don't think it means he'd be fastest over 100m. Over 200-400m, I think he'd start getting overtaken.

Debate at work who is 2nd fastest player to play for boro
30.01.09 | tribalfootball.com
Olympic Games champion Usain Bolt has put Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on the spot about the fastest player at Old Trafford.

He asked Sir Alex: “Who is the quickest player you’ve worked with?

Sir Alex told the club’s official magazine Inside United – celebrating its 200th anniversary: “We’ve had a lot of quick players here. If you’re talking over certain distances, then Gary Pallister would have taken some beating in a sprint.

“I think he was the quickest in the 100 metres. But speed in football isn’t about running 100 metres on a football pitch. So you’ve also got to consider Kanchelskis, Ronaldo, Giggs, Cole, Paul Parker - he was very, very quick - Anderson, Ferdinand, Lee Sharpe as a young kid was quick before he started to get bigger.

“Paul Ince was very quick. So that group of players would be in it, but over 100 metres, Pallister would have beaten any of them. In a football sense, I’d say Kanchelskis and Giggs, particularly when he was younger.”

I wonder how they measure that? (MyFooty link).

Can't just be average speed during time on the pitch; he'd be running well over a marathon in 90 mins!

So is it average speed when sprinting? If so, when does a sprint start? Is it just sprints from standing starts, or does it include those when the player is jogging to start with?

Sounds mad but I reckon Alan Foggon who, remember, was a sprint champion at his school. He looked heavy but he was deceptively quick and our promotion in 73-74 was down in no small way to him running onto balls knocked by Bobby Murdoch into space behind opposition defenders which Foggon was onto in a flash and dispatched nicely. If you weren’t around at the time you might find it hard to believe but it was very effective for two seasons until, as Jack Charlton told me when I met him, opposition teams cottoned onto it and that’s when Foggon was finished with us.

To compare old with new if often dangerous, not to mention difficult but to return to Billy Day. I've a feeling he recorded a time of 9.8 seconds which was within half a second of the athletics record back in the day.

Today the record is just 9.87 ? add o.5 to come up with 9.92. Most people would agree that is seriously fast

As the majority of the lads were in the army it is a bit like Day being the fastest man in his age group in the country.

I was aware that Gary Pally was seriously quick over 100 m. I'm sure he represented Man U

I was also interested to read that Stewie was faster than Raheem ...... interesting

"Do you not remember this one from Traore? (linked)"

TBF that's nowhere close to 100m

The Riverside pitch is 105m long, and he runs, at most, half of it.

Built as he is, there's going to come a distance where other players overtake him. It might be within 100m; it might not be in 200m. Nowi think of it, he's a similar build to John Regis, who I think specialised in 200m

However, 400m is still considered a sprint, and I expect plenty to beat him over that.

Think clearly there's a massive difference between top speed and acceleration. Acceleration is probably more effective in football and very few beat Traore for that, probably in the world.

However to say he wouldn't be that quick over longer distances (in terms of football pitch sizes anyway) is clearly nonsense as we've seen it. He terrified Spurs in that premier League season partly because of how quick he closed them down, often starting 20/30 yards away.

The Downing one just adds to the frustration around him. If he was still that quick why did he seem so reluctant to take his man on when he came back? Very rarely beat his man on the outside. Was it mental? Lack of acceleration? Or was it to do with not being as fast while running with the ball at his feet?

Stewy was rapid to be fair. When he forced his way back in under Monk and was playing well he was doing full-backs for speed all the time.

He wasn't looking that short of pace when we played them the other week either.
