Defectors were asked to choose reasons why they defected this is what they said.

1. Did not want JC as PM. 53%
2. Did not feel Labour could deliver on promises 40%
3. Did not feel Labour represented people like me any more 37%

For interest
4. Wanted to make Brexit happen. 30%

Not trusted you deliver Brexit, Corbyn was anti EU his whole career.. then changed his position.

Labour MPs ignoring their constituents and undermining the leadership and the membership.

They promised too much. Save the NHS and a soft Brexit would have stormed the election.

Whilst I am a Tory I will say this;

1) Labour have some very good politicians and some real never change diehards like Jezza and Dennis Skinner. The NHS babble started to sound like a broken record.
Labour top brass didnít want Brexit and I respect their decision to be fair. But the country DID so continually vetoing any progress was hardly going to win any popularity contests.

2) They seem to be constantly falling out with former head honchos Blair and Brown, who have started hanging around like dead geese despite talking a lot of sense.

3) Many voters got spooked by the attitude towards the Salisbury poisoning, also the anti-Semitism jibes were like an unwanted tattoo at the end.

I think toff Starmer will be their next leader, he speaks well and maybe they can claw back a few seats in the heartlands.

Say what you want about Jezza but he is a Labour man and doesnít try to be anything else. He had a good election in 2017 and forced the Tories into forming a government with an Irish party nobody had heard of. All went down from there. The Working Classes love Boris, sorry but that is how it is.

Press did their work on large swathes of the Electorate - job done. It's why Billionaires buy papers and the like, not for the minimal direct profit they make on that investment.

There are of course issues within the Labour Party but there are also issues within the Conservative Party, just one has the press on side and the other doesn't.

According to a LSE study, Three-quarters of newspaper stories about Jeremy Corbyn fail to accurately report his views. One of the worst offenders was The Guardian.

Exactly, then there was the free reign the Conservatives were given to tell lie after lie in their campaign, Labour were found not to be.

Not turning up for agreed interviews, hiding in freezers, zero scrutiny.

Make no mistake, labour made serious errors, but and were outflanked by the Tory machine, but the press were at the centre for allowing the party mislead the electorate.

there is something a lot simpler: old people

Younger people voted for Labour; the bitter, spiteful old d1ckheads voted for a public school toff who they have absolutely nothing in common with.

Its that daft and that simple. The same generation that kept thatcher in power; voted in privatisation that raped the industries that our town relied on and destroyed the manufacturing industry. the same generation that just loves to deny their own kids, & particularly grandkids, the same prospects they had.

Bu its ok. we have a couple of low-wage call centres and blue passports

Unfortunately young people are unlikely to swing votes in labour's favour any time soon. The younger voters who tend to be politically active and more inclined to vote are students, and those students tend to settle in safe Labour seats/big cities. That's why there's a record majority despite overwhelming support from young people.

Labour were a shambles in their campaign and it's time people accepted how important branding, public appearance and media is, especially when you are selling something new to the public. Labour could have had the same Brexit policy as the Tories but no one would be convinced they were genuine with it, just like no one was convinced with their second referendum and a Labour exit.

Ultimately the Leadership is to blame, that's what it all comes down to, the policies choices were wrong, the way they branded the policies ie radical, socialist etc were wrong and the way they displayed themselves publicly was also a mistake. There's a large percentage of the population who will have been watching Corbyn debate with Johnson and thinking nothing other "What a miserable XXXXXX he is". All the whilst they are being told that they need help and are doomed without them etc, the exact opposite working class people want to hear.

There's also the elephant in the room that the working class voters in towns and villages tend to be socially Conservative, at a time when Labour a veering further to the left. They have to be tactful and sensible in addressing this moving forwards, ignoring it will lead to more of the same.

There's nowt like blaming everything and anybody around you than actually looking at the faults inside.

Until you take a long hard look inside the Labour party, its values, policies and people in five years time you'll be pointing your fingers in a multitude of directions once again.

Only with Ms. Long Bailey at the helm.

Labour members take some responsibility, especially your condescending attitude towards anyone with a different opinion to you, you don't listen you just alienate and insult.

Labour's problems are inside the party and with its Momentum wing, as your new saying goes- 'Own it!'

Bang on the money. I said time and time again I've voted labour all my life and this time I voted tory. I am exactly the kind of voter labour should be asking why I switched. I have always voted Labour, but never blindly and in spite of their manifesto.

I am anti-brexit and despite Corbyn's faults he was the only one who I believed was behind his or her parties manifesto.

There are many reasons why Labour lost, brexit is the main one, but the anti-Corbyn media are another and to a lesser degree they over-reached with their manifesto - it was difficult to convince voters that most of it could be reasonably delivered.

Yes all the DWP vote Tory (you have serious issues)

Said time and time again during the whole election campaign and after I was a leave voter. I thought it was a huge mistake for labour to switch their stance. If they had stuck with leave labour remain voters when faced with the option of a Tory leave government or a labour leave government wouldnít have defected to the Lib Dems in droves as they thought. They would have held onto a lot of their leave voters too.

Unfortunately their disaster of a stance gave the tories an open goal for the leave vote.

I felt it was more important that the 2016 vote was observed. Itís done now and when the next election comes round depending how labour go I may then go back

The mistake was to try to be all things to all voters.

The vast Majority of labour members and MPs were remain and internationalist. It is those they should have stood by and fu.ck the leavers. the hard left of the party wanted their version of lexit and fooled theirselves into thinking the public would go for it.

it was a single issue GE - fu.ck broadband etc.
If they had gone all in for a second vote they wouldve done well but corbyn and his allies, along with jo swinson, just buried their head in the sand instead of forming a meaningful remain alliance inc. plaid cymru and the SNP which wouldve taken a majority, as was seen in the GE.
The gammon leavers would never have been convinced that labour would offer any sort of brexit but labour tried to the end to win them over.

MoggasDog still failing to grasp that there was a huge reman alliance for 3.5 years with clever people in every party telling everyone how stupid they were.
You would have thought such an "obvious" rationale to remain, coming from so very many very "clever" people would have prevailed?

There wasn't one Brexit reason for Labour's failure, there were many reasons which were important to different cohorts for different reasons.
Brexit; leadership; trust in economic capability; belief in practicability of policy; perception of Momentum grip; anti-semitism and others.
But they have to also look at who they lost to and consider what connected for them, instead of just insulting the millions who voted for them.

1) Corbyn didnít bother with the North, even in the run up to the general election. One of the many reasons voters just couldnít connect with him.

2) A shocking media agenda against him.

3) Promises that just didnít sell to enough people, and a pathetic stance on Brexit.

100% agree with this, they switched from Labour to Tory, and now think the're rich enough that voting leave wont screw them. Maybe some of them are correct, but they're daft enough to no realise who is going to be looking after them in the NHS hospital or care homes.

They want it to go back to the "gold old days" of everyone being white British, fighting wars, working down mines and doing assembly jobs on production lines.

BREXIT and media-brainwashing

In 2014 a UK MORI poll found only 6% of those surveyed had an issue with EU membership, so 94% were in favour

What happened after that is the "Paradise Papers" and scandal of how many wealthy people were avoiding tax via the Cayman Islands

The EU has just black-listed Cayman Island tax avoidance schemes, and the wealthy knew it was coming along with other EU anti-avoidance legislation

So the biased elements of the press went into overdrive to persuade people the EU is a bad thing, and it worked incredibly well. So easy to persuade the uneducated to vote against their own interests if you have the money and influence. Brexit has all been to help the rich keep avoiding tax, there are no benefits to most people, just downsides like the trashing of the economy

I voted remain & would dispute that 94% were in favour.

I'd say 6% were swivel eyed loons and got their knickers in a twist about bent bananas (or was it straight ones?) & [pulls figure from thin air] about 6% were complete Europhiles, with the remaining 88% being a various amounts of meh about the whole thing.

All the referendum did was make that 88% pick a side, do you want change or do you want status quo.

Cameron's error was not making the Leave side define the future relationship that people were voting for.

Made it easy for them to promise the world to everyone, decry concerns as project fear.
