How many do S Africa have to make in order to
In a match of five days or more, a side which bats first and leads by at least 200 runs has the option of requiring the other side to follow-on. in a match of three or four days, 150 runs; in a two-day match, 100; in a one-day match with two innings per side, 75.

Not sure how it's calculated.

Don't they need 300 in that case? If they get 299 England will still lead by "at least 200"

Or am I being thick?

I think even though it says 200, I think it means over 200, ie 201. It's early so I may be being thick as well.

Not necessarily a follow on coming up.

If we bowl them out for less than the follow on mark we may just bat on so that SA will have to bat 4th when the wicket is at its worst and our bowlers have a rest before they try to bowl the opposition out for a second time.

Incidentally, the follow on can be enforced in a 5 day game if a team has a lead of 200 (or more) and therefore SA need 300 at least to avoid giving England the chance of asking them to follow on.

How many do S Africa have to make in order to
299 would leave them 200 behind and could be made to follow-on
They need 300

How many do S Africa have to make in order to
200 is good enough, as is 201, according to the follow-on law.

"In a two-innings match of 5 days or more, the side which bats first and leads by at least 200 runs shall have the option of requiring the other side to follow their innings."

very rare these days that the follow on in enforced in the 5 day game, captains tend to like to give the bowlers a break.

With rain expected it could be the only way England can win. But still need to restrict them and that doesn't look good with the current pair.
