We picked a team to lose

Every team needs at least one - or preferably 2/3 - players who can put a foot on the ball, take responsibility, see a pass, take a man on. Every fan knows who those players are, and when you see them left out, you wonder how you are going to score.

Leaving Roberts & Tavernier on the bench was basically an admission that we weren't up for the fight tonight. You have to put at least some fear in the opposition.

The team was selected to give us the best chance of a result on Friday

Agreed, but we should have picked at least one of those two. We had no outlet.

We weren't humiliated but in no way were we competitive. It was the FA Cup, with 4,000 fans following us - anything can happen. To roll over for an outside chance of the play offs?

Or to give it a go with a really, really outside chance of winning the FA Cup

Team selection made sense to me. Even if we had beaten Spurs somehow, chances of another away win at Southampton was highly unlikely.

So yes a pretty positive outcome - a nice trip to the new stadium for the youngsters, and a chance to play against some quality players. A run out for a couple of reserves and we didn't embarrass ourselves, in fact showed ourselves in a pretty good light second half.

Not a game for the neutral though!

Fulham is the key game and he rightly prioritised that.

No issue from me to the team or to any I spoke to tonight at the ground.

Obvious was a weakened team, and saving some for friday.
I have no problem with that at all, makes sense.
The weakened team didnt do too bad.
Think woodgate is on the right track.

XXXXXX.He picked a competetive team that was knackered by a goalie error which happens to all teams with a view to a more important game onFriday.

What has Friday got to do with it? Don't enter the sodding competition if you're not interested in competing. Save us all a few quid.

I think we did need one of either Tav or Roberts in the side.

There were big gaps between our midfield and defence, and between the midfield and front two. At times the ball went up to the strikers, or Wing and they had nowhere to go as Spence and Johnson were behind the play and struggling to get up and support the attacks at times, although Spence really did bust a gut at times.

This did change in the 2nd half, and we had a bit of a go.

At the end of the day though we move on.

Woodgate in his interview made no secret of the fact he was going to make changes with the Friday night match coming up.

He was absolutely straight about it.
